Randy Newman might have 20 recognizable songs just from that... ;)

But Pixar movies do well in Europe, don't they?

That was the point: Randy Newman has so many songs in Pixar movies that his work will be recognizable by millions worldwide...

Btw, if Elton John doesn’t make it to 20 recognizable songs by someone’s standards, there’s no way Tom Petty (OP Parachute Woman’s opening example) does either.

Never associated the Pixar theme songs with Randy. But you're right, these will sound familiar. But I don't think that a lot of people here started listening to Randy Newman albums because of these theme songs.

The reality is 'recognizable' is really ambiguous. Among music fans, sure, some of these are true. Among the casual listener, most of these lists are exaggerated.

The average person walking down the street today would maybe know 3 Prince songs.
Yeah - this thread is a little subjective.

If you ask a person on the street, they might know two Prince songs.
Take them to a show, they might "recognize" five or six.
As a person on this forum, they can rattle off 20 hits.

Yup. Only a handful of artists with as many or more "recognizable songs" than Elton...

Or maybe you don't know them. All of them were Top 10 AOR hits. If you listen to album rock radio you've heard them, but if you only listen to Madonna-type pop stations you may not have.

So in your world, it's either AOR or Madonna-type pop or bust, I guess.

As with most artists, a small section of people will know all of those tracks but most won't. I guess the OP is something along the lines of 'play 20 tracks by the same artist in a supermarket/shopping mall etc and have at least 50% of the occupants know the songs' - it's almost impossible.

I think the public are much more likely to recognise Under Pressure (which I think counts despite the Queen input) than tracks like DJ or Sound and Vision. For people living in the UK, Hello Spaceboy (Pet Shop Boys remix), Jump, They Say and I'm Afraid of Americans would probably also be recognisable. It's a great list and Bowie fits the criteria, at least in the UK. It's probably the same for Queen.

If we're talking about the great-unwashed, Joe/Jane-average casual music fan on the street in Yorkshire, Adelaide, Phoenix, Winnipeg, etc., nearly every answer in this thread is wrong. I mean, people are listing The Hollies... I've been a 60s' music fan for 30+ years, and I think I can recognize two Hollies' songs...? Okay, maybe three.

Somebody like Sinatra might have been true in 1965, but today how many people under 65 can name three Sinatra songs?

So, if we're talking about random people on the street (the kind who would never peruse a website like this one), the answers are probably: The Beatles, Michael Jackson / Jackson 5 / Jacksons, and maybe Elvis. That's probably it.

EDIT: Maybe Stevie Wonder & Madonna...
