A lot of great sounding recordings were coming from Warner Bros. around that time, not just Dire Straits. The Doobie Brothers set the bar pretty high as well.

The Clash - London Calling, 2013 MOV vinyl remaster. High-end, low-end, midrange, all kick butt with beautiful clarity. Their Give 'Em Enough Rope and Sandinista! reissue sound great too.

Thing about the Eagles - the drums on all the Bill Symczyk productions sound as dead as possible. I greatly prefer the sound Glyn Johns got with Henley.

Well yes there is a big difference between them. Maybe that ultra clean record it all separately to 48 track method didn't work so well on drums.

Yeah, Love Over Gold -- nice fresh vinyl copy, way back when I was in college, maybe 1986 or so -- was the first record that ever made me sit up straight and realize, Damn, Jack, this SOUNDS amazing -- !

That and splicing multiple drum takes together, but that is a 'feel' issue, not a sound quality one.
But the Henley-Frey Gang did have that rivalry with Steely Dan, and that probably is what pushed them in that direction.

Very true. And perhaps it had to do with the production team as well. Muff Winwood produced the Dire Straits self titled record and the first UK pressings on Vertigo Spaceship are fabulous (and unlike the earlier Swirls, not crazy money). And RLJ's producers were no slouches either. That era for Warners was very rich musically too. I always had the impression that part of it had to do with Mo Ostins' leadership- I think in the day he was regarded as an artist-friendly label chief.

    Cool thread idea.

Off the top of my head:

    Supertramp - COTC
Dire Straits - s/t, Communique, BIA, Love over Gold, On Every Street
Steely Dan- most if not all
Pink Floyd - most if not all
Elton John - most if not all circa 1970-76
    Mark Knopfler - all
Blood Sweat and Tears - first 3 albums
    Toto - IV
Grace Jones - Slave to the Rhythm
Genesis - Selling England By The Pound, A Trick of the Tail
Kevin Gilbert - The Shaming of the True

All of KG's stuff sounds good IMO, even the heavy 80s-sounding stuff he did with Toy Matinee and Giraffe sounds superb.

For music he has mastered, right?

Cuz, PT releases of Deadwing and In Absentia on CD are not what I would consider "audiophile level".

I have ZZ Top's Tres Hombres and Heart's Dreamboat Annie on 180g vinyl and they are amazing sounding.

  22. Thanks for that Bill! I now understand why I've been a fan of Warner (Reprise as well) pressings for a long time. The America LPs are another great example of excellent Warner pressings.

I am a huge Doobies fan and their vinyl is wonderful. Ted Templeman did a great job. Also, agree with someone above, he did a good job with the Van Halen stuff.
My choices for classic rock would be Z.Z. Top - Deguello and Iron Maiden - Peace of Mind on vinyl.
