Bishop, Bishop, Flower, Corsano. Glad my curiosity led me to click the link. Thanks for the head's up!
I went to three gigs in five days recently that qualify for this thread: a fifth anniversary gig for an London-based concert series called 840 at Cafe Oto, Apartment House playing compositions by Jim O'Rourke (also at Cafe Oto); and then on Tuesday a free gig at City University seeing Steve Beresford, and violinist and leader of the Ligeti Quartet, Mandhira de Saram where I picked this up. Only one play so far but sounded pretty fine.
Another slice of wonderful PO Music? I wasn't even aware of its existence since it has apparently never been released on CD! André Jaume / Joe McPhee featuring Raymond Boni - Tales And Prophecies Hopefully Corbett & Dempsey, which now own almost all McPhee recordings he originally did for HatHut, will re-release it sooner than later...
It's a wonderful recording. I try to look out for as much McPhee as I can, and found this sitting in a bin locally. The same group evidently got together in Paris for an anniversary gig a few years back that was recorded for posterity and released on limited vinyl. Just found out about that from this review. Excited to hear it. Raymond Boni / Jean Marc Foussat / Joe McPhee– The Paris Concert (KYE Records, 2016) ****½ ~ The Free Jazz Collective
I have a soft spot for the PO Music series created for HatHut by the nucleus formed by Joe McPhee, Raymond Boni and André Jaume. Here are excerpts from the interviews with Joe, which cast some light on that very special period of his activity: Different Perspectives In My Room...!: JOE McPHEE – Old Eyes (LP-1980) Alliance for Improvised Music - Joe McPhee Interview Page One
Peter Brotzmann Big Bad Quintet: Karacho! Brand new live set with 2 basses including John Edwards plus the young phenom Christian Lillinger on drums pretty great despite the basses being a bit too low in the mix. The great man sounds as great as he ever has as he goes through his mid 70’s recorded live in 2017
Haven't heard this one yet. Did recently pick up this and really enjoying it. Recorded in 2018. You're right about how powerful he still is, which can be said of his fellow players here as well.
Huge fan of free sax man Flaherty, and super happy to be able to have this, one of only 100 hard copies. He's not as well known as he should be, so if you want one from this excellent session there are some left, and I highly recommend.
I strongly recommend the two Dragonfly Breath recordings on Not Two records. The second one was recorded live at The Stone on 1/24/2015. Second set. Very few people stayed and the show/set started late due to some issues with Flaherty being able to play. The full 40 minute set is in the second recording. Both are on Not Two Records Dragonfly Breath is: Steve Swell on trombone C Spencer Yeh on violin and voice Paul Flaherty on alto & tenor saxophones Weasel Walter on drums
I’m also a Flaherty fan but I prefer him with some sort of string instrument rather than just a drummer. Despite how good the duets with Corsano were. But that goes with almost all diet sessions with sax/drums. There are only a few I return to like Dried Rat Dog with Brotzmann & Drake. Maybe once in a while I can listen to McPhee in duet with a drummer but a great bassist always makes things better to my ears. Add John Edwards or Michael Bisio or Mark Dresser or Brandon Lopez to the mix and I’m in heaven.
Pretty much my feelings as well. If you have a chance, though, listen to the Dead Centipedes recording. Some really great stuff on there including some very melodic passages.
