New York United by Daniel Carter, Tobias Wilner, Djibril Toure, Federico Ughi 2019, 577 Records MAN this is a good listen, really creative. The electronic aspects, the bass/drums, and Daniel Carter doing his thing with several instruments. It's almost like a mix of avant-garde jazz and trip hop. Looking forward to the second album coming out soon.
Sir Richard Bishop / Ava Mendoza - The Ivory Tower 2016 Listened to the Ava Mendoza side... Awesome. The last song "Kiss of Fire" sounds like an old Spanish folk song or something, but it's instrumental electric guitar. I'm guessing it's a cover. Everything sounds fantastic here.
Companion Environ by Landon Caldwell & Flower Head Ensemble 2021 Motoki Asaoka - Electric Guitar Landon Caldwell - Generative Synthesis Programming, Clarinet, Flute, Marimba, Rhodes Rob Funkhouser - Percussion, Vibraphone Jim Marlowe - Japanese Electric Banjo, PVC Clarinet John Collins McCormick - Percussion Mark Tester - Bass Guitar, Moog Prodigy, Vibraphone I liked Caldwell's release on Moon Glyph a few months back. This one is pretty similar but with a different lineup. The mix of spacey new age / ambient and moody jazz works really well for me.
Just finished my first close listen. It's really well done and sounds great on headphones with one musician on each side. It's like sitting in on a conversation between the two of them.
As far as modern day horn players go, Shiroishi is somewhere near the top of the list for me. The guy never fails in anything I've listened to him on, and these days I'm listening to a lot of it. Peak form here. As is his partner on woodwinds here Rob Magill.
I like Patrick Shiroishi a lot as well, from what I've heard. My first exposure to him was Descension, which I absolutely loved on first listen. I had learned of it through the record label, Thin Wrist, as I'm a fan of 75 Dollar Bill. I've enjoyed his recent quartet albums "Jusell, Pyrmek, Sage, Shiroishi" which seem to be much more ambient/new age than most of his work. He's got a TON of stuff I haven't heard though.

Of The Shapes Of Hearts And Humans by Patrick Shiroishi and Zachary Paul 2021 Gorgeous duo recordings here.
Forever Is an Infinite Always by Daniel Carter, Brad Farberman, and Kid Millions 2021 Daniel Carter // flute + trumpet + tenor saxophone Brad Farberman // guitar Kid Millions // drums This is a short 29 minute album that comes together really well. I love the guitar tone from Farberman here. I think this album and the one before it are the only places I've heard him.
I need to check this guy out, I keep getting him mixed up with Tom Carter, and Kid Millions from Oneida is a band I dig....
I've heard of Oneida but haven't given them a try yet... I'll check them out for sure. I really like Daniel Carter. He doesn't play with the intensity of a guy like Dave Rempis, but I find him really creative and versatile. He can blend in well with any musicians. I'd maybe compare him to someone like Joe Henderson in that regard. One of my favorites is this live date from Tufts a few years back, with William Parker and Matthew Shipp. Although he's more of a band member on this one rather than a leader. Matthew Shipp is incredible on this record. Seraphic Light by Daniel Carter / William Parker / Matthew Shipp
Thollem's Astral Traveling Sessions - Thollem / John Dieterich 2021, Astral Spirits John Dieterich, Dobro Thollem, Synth (Waldorf Blofeld) A couple of new ones were released today and I realized that I still have some catching up to do on this series... This one with John Dieterich is insane! One of my favorites so far. Noisy and kind of weird.
Thollem's Astral Traveling Sessions - Thollem / Susan Alcorn 2021, Astral Spirits Susan Alcorn, Pedal Steel Thollem, Synth (Waldorf Blofeld) Recorded December, 2019 in Baltimore, Maryland by Susan Alcorn And, I have a new favorite from the series. This is excellent.
