The Pitch - KM28 2021, Tripticks Tapes Boris Baltschun - JI organ, sines Koen Nutters - upright bass Morten Joh - JI electric vibes, cassette tape delay Michael Thieke - clarinet Serious drone music with vibraphone, organ, etc... Great headphone listen.
I struggle with avant garde definition, does this fit here? Most of John Carter and Bobby Bradford’s Flight for Four and all of Horace Tapscott’s Giant is Awakened with Arthur Blythe. This is about as out as I get
I thought about putting this on the Classical & Conversation thread but it doesn't rally fir so here will do. The Hermes Experiment are a chamber quartet of voice, clarinet, double bass, and harp who - mainly because there isn't a lot written for a quartet like that - commission pieces from British composers - a lot of them young and up and coming. Anyway, their second album is released today on Delphian. They're one of my current favourites and I've seen them twice since restrictions were lifted in May. SONG
Matt Mitchell & Kate Gentile Snarkhorse 6 CD set On disc 2. Fascinating. Saw one version of the group/collective in 2019 that included Mat Maneri & Ben Gerstein. Mitchell is a great pianist and a brilliant mind. This set includes Jon Irabagon, Kim Cass & Brandon Seabrook as well. Compositions (from Gentile & Mitchell) are said to be 1 bar compositions - damn if I know - but me likey so far. Especially when Gerstein, Maneri & Seabrook are featured. Three amazing improvisers.
Have the Corbett vs. Dempsey cd reissue of this which is very good, but couldn't resist the new vinyl reissue that Berlin label Our Swimmer just put out of this and two other ICP titles. Have no idea of the legitimacy of the label, but they've reissued some excellent, very hard to get titles over the last year, and this one sounds excellent.
John Zorn - Masada Book 3: The Book Beri'ah (Tzadik box, 2019) 11 CDs of Zorn-composed music, performed by artists like Spike Orchestra (who I'm listening to now), Julian Lage & Gyan Riley, Gnostic Trio, Secret Chiefs 3, and Craig Taborn.
Emily Robb - How to Moonwalk 2021 LP won't be out until December but the download is available now... This is a solid half hour of ragged, badass guitar. Bill Nace helped with the recording. It might be the power of suggestion but I can hear his influence in her playing.
Another beautiful vinyl reissue of this essential music from Our Swimmer. If you have a turntable and aren't lucky enough to own original's, grab these ICP vinyl reissues while they still exist. ICP Tentet – Tetterettet
Lowell Davidson Trio Listening to #6/30 of the reissue from last year. Imagine a slightly more restrained Cecil Taylor and that should put you in the right ballpark. Featuring Gary Peacock and Milford Graves!
Jeroen van Veen - Minimal Piano Collection Volume XXI-XXVIII (Brilliant Classics 8CD box, 2017) The first four discs consist of Dennis Johnson's "November," which is about 5 hours long.
Promo copy! One of Anthony Braxton's first appearances. A great free jazz album that can still be had for quite cheaply.
Do you know if Our Swimmer is a legitimate or a bootleg label? They have a killer selection of titles but I can't find any info about the label online
I don't. They are supposedly a German label, so I 'd like to think that they have some relationship with the artists. But the pressings and sleeves are well done, and I just like having them on vinyl.
Congratulations on getting the full set The only way i could get the final one was having it delivered to a friend in France Isn’t it a wonderful set? I discovered so many new artists through the whole series EAR Storm Bugs Andy Hawkins (that River Blindness track wow!!) Angus Macalise Loop orchestra Scanner The scope of the set is astounding Sadly I heard reports that some of the artists aren’t being paid properly for licensing I’m just hoping that’s offset by the amount of people who buy the artists other music after hearing a track here I must mention a Radio Show called Freeness on BBC Radio 3 that plays new improv and electronica
I, too, heard that some artists' works are being used without permission. Thanks for the tip on Freeness!
Misha Mengelberg, Peter Brötzmann, Evan Parker, Peter Bennink, Paul Rutherford (2), Derek Bailey, Han Bennink – Groupcomposing FWIW, the back of this Our Swimmer vinyl reissue does say that they licensed the rights to the album from Corbett vs. Dempsey, who legitimately reissued it on CD previously so that would indicate to me that they are legitimate also.
