Throughout most of the 60's the Beatles set the standard for what a pop/rock band is, surpassing all others in popularity. Innovative songwriting, production, art direction and a cultural fascination with the group, the band came to epitomize many of the musical stylings of the 60's. Following the Beatles break-up there didn't seem to be that one group that took the crown from The Beatles. Many bands had a great deal of chart success or popularity but not to the levels of The Beatles. A few acts come to mind but curious what others may think. My shortlist.

Elton John - Popular, strong production on albums, but didn't seem to be as much a political/cultural figure.
Crosby, Stills, Nash, Young - potentially could have become the band of the 70's but too short-lived.
Rolling Stones - early 70's their best album work, but later 70's good not great albums.
Led Zeppelin - after 75 physical graffti, downward slope

    Thoughts?
a bit trite topic, but fun nonetheless.

Led Zep from '70 to '76

Pink Floyd from '77 to 1980.

Michael Jackson, Prince, U2 and Van Halen probably owned the 1980s.

The 1990s? Maybe Nirvana, and various heritage acts like the Stones, Dead and Floyd. After 2000 things fragmented and the scene is "owned" by Sheeran and various postrels.

But nobody will ever equal, let alone surpass, the musical and cultural impact and dominance of the Fabs.

Elton John had success with albums and singles. For album sales it looks like Zep dominated. Stones get credit for maintaining momentum throughout the 70s.

The Beatles were lightening in a jar. Everything just fell perfectly in place. There was never one single act since that changed the landscape in that way.

It’s hard for me to understand how you all don’t see it’s the Stones unless you did not live thru those times. but it’s the
Stones. Their 72 and 75 US tours received SO much media coverage. Before there was media coverage. They became the
    Kings of Rock.

Queen took two or three albums to delve themselves into the charts but once the did ,they stayed. In Europe at least. They were also a four-headed monster who wrote and played everything themselves and used the studio as a canvas for their imagination.

Nice Thread, OP! All the above...Check!
    Spice Girls
    Oasis

(Same time period: 1 pop/1 rock.) There have been successful power-pop/rock bands, but not of The Beatles stature.
Overall, historically, I don't think any have actually "taken the Beatles' crown"...more of a "loan". :):winkgrin:

P.S. Welcome OP! You're off to a great start posting a Beatles' thread! :D:laugh:

Elton John was a hit-making machine during that time. Just churning them out.
