A further data point: the most intensely rabid Springsteen fan I've ever met was Italian.

I'm a fan of a lot of prog, like Yes and Rush and Gabriel-era Genesis, and I'm all about musical adventurism.
    I also love jazz.
So when people keep praising Soft Machine, a jazzy British prog band, that would seem right up my alley.

Yesterday I tried listening to their Third album for like the 10th time and I don't get. A few decent passages but the rest is either repetitive without any affect, formless without the adventurism of other prog bands I like, and the one song that has a little singing has TERRIBLE singing. Their first two albums are decent but not stunning psychdelic rock and their Fourth album is like a parody of elevator jazz or something.

I got over the 'should' thing about 20 years ago. That said, if someone I respect suggests I check something out, I will, even The Grateful Dead

There are some artists I think I should like because they are similiar to ssome other artists I like, but just can't get into.
Like Hank Williams Sr, so I should also be able to get into Patsy Cline's music.
Like Glenn Miller, so I should be able to get into Benny Goodman's music.
Doesn't always work that way. I've given up on trying to get into an artist.
It either happens or it doesn't. The more I try the harder it is.

Elton John, just never taken him seriously. Might be unfair, and I accept that, as I don't have one record of his.

The Grateful Dead. I actually like the greatest hits CD quite a bit, but all the live stuff I've heard kinda sucks.

I 'like' them and own all their original studio albums; but I don't 'love' them any near as much as I should do, considering their period/influences.

But Mike's response was way off what the thread is about: it's not about 'what band does peer pressure tell you that you are obliged to like more than you do?'. It's about those cases where (say) you really like everything about a band - the guitarwork, the lyrics, the image, whatever is important to you - and yet you don't like the band. It's a bit like those 'artist you don't get' threads except that the spin here is that you get everything about the band, even like it, yet there's still something missing. Another way to put it would be to ask 'what band is not, for you, a sum of its parts?'

This begs the question: which two albums? Ani is one of my all-time favourite artists but there are several of her albums that are very, very disappointing.

Every time I see somebody come into a thread and do nothing but get snotty about the question, I think of this.

Modify nouns and pronouns as necessary.

Anyway, I love prog. I detest ELP. Can't put my finger on why.

I love late period Roxy Music and Bryan Ferry. I can't stand Steely Dan. There's not THAT much distance between the two. Weird.

I love power pop. The Flamin' Groovies are OK.

I love Nick Drake. And nothing else from that scene.

I love Funkadelic. Can't seem to click with Parliament.

I know I should like Nick Cave. He has all the qualities I admire in an artist, but I just don't connect. One day I'll probably buy a box set of his stuff, and then everything will fall into place.
