Indeed. "All Summer Long", "Smiley Smile", "Wild Honey", "Love You" and "Holland"... all essentially the same album. You heard one you heard them all.

Hell, just take a look at their output from '66 to '68: Pet Sounds > Smiley Smile > Wild Honey > Friends. Each of these albums has it's own distinct sonic character. Sure, the trademark vocal blend is there throughout, but they go from baroque chamber pop to stripped down psychedelia to tuneful but rockin' r&b to mellow minimalism in just two years.

Can it be safely said that the Sex Pistols were a band that were not in danger of making the same album over again?

Van Halen? Really? Sure, the first 2 albums were pretty much the same but did "Jump" or "I'll Wait" from 1984 sound like anything on the earlier albums? Plus the fact that they had three different singers. Can you really say that that the Sammy Hagar albums sounded the same as the David Lee Roth albums? I think not.

The Rolling Stones is an absurd example. Some Girls sounds nothing like Sticky Fingers, which sounds nothing like Aftermath, which sounds nothing like Their Satanic Majesties Request.

What I'm saying is post-Brian Wilson breakdown nothing the Beach Boys did was relevant.

True, but I find that subject much more interesting than this thread.

That is subjective, totally off topic and therefore irrelevant.

The Ramones probably take second in my book (to KISS) but I essentially agree.

In regards to a band that made the same album over and over again, I'd say one good example is Ozzy-era Black Sabbath

I haven't heard them all but Nerve Net doesn't sound much like any other Eno album I know.

    But but but...

Technical Ecstacy doesn't at all sound like the debut or Sabbath Bloody Sabbath. Vol. 4 doesn't sound like any of those again. And Never Say Die isn't really similar in any way to either Paranoid or Master of Reality. To top it all, Sabotage doesn't bear much resemblance to any of the other seven.

Maybe it could be the hearing that does it, either mine or yours :D

But it's nice actually. If you loved the debut album you surely want more like that.

Even among his ambient albums, Apollo doesn't sound like On Land doesn't sound like Tuesday Afternoon.

Almost every single example in this thread is based on LACK of intimate familiarity with the band's discography. Having a formula does not mean they made the same album over and over again.
