Rush by 4 million miles. Geddy Lee sounds like my geriatric neighbor yelling at her husband through the kitchen window.
Yeah Billy Corgan's voice was not an enjoyable aspect of that band for me either. But if I like a band's sound enough (Rush would be an example) I easily can accept vocals I don't really like and Smashing Pumpkins were never a band that grabbed me.
Yes , early Rush is a good example , as his voice got better the material got worse although I think Rush best album is where it meets in the middle is Permanent Waves , Yes is one band where I never like the singers voice or the Music either. Bob Dylan is another one , the list is endless !
I was just thinking how it took me til I was nearing 50 or so (5 years ago) to like Led Zeppelin, as I always hated Robert Plant's voice when younger. I don't listen to them much anyway, but it's the first band I thought of - I couldn't get past his voice.
Yeah thats true , what an annoying little git, I had a weak moment and bought Breakfast in America and Crime of the Century,
Processing the hell out of your voice is always a mistake IMO. It's ruined for me many singers that I would otherwise enjoy. I want singers to sound like people.
There are many “vocalists” but darn few singers in r&r…Lennon, Jagger, Plant, J. Walsh, S. Tyler, Springsteen, Petty, Dylan, G. Lake, T. Swift, M. Morris, Madonna… ad infinitum really. Their fans don’t care that they cannot sing. I do -and the music can never overcome it for me. the vocals are a sensitive issue for me and I shall not engage a recording which offers a vocalist instead of a singer.
TMBG: Flansberg’s voice took some adjustment for me. As it got better recorded/engineered, I warmed to it a lot more. The early geek factor—those g**damned monkeys typing away—scared me off for a bit too, but now I really like these guys. Also, the lead singer of Sigur Ros: good band, but it sounded like they had kidnapped a small boy and held him before a microphone at gunpoint. Yet I got over that too. (I hope that kid is okay.)
