Brian had already gotten into using brass on the Wild Honey album, I think the brass on Friends is a continuation of that. It’s more interesting to me that he started using strings again after abandoning them along with the Smile project. He was back in full producer mode - brass, saxes, bass harmonica, accordion, strings, sound effects.

while i don't have complete sessionography up, it is a little interesting given the general rep of 'his most super progressive out there stuff' that smile's actual instrumentation use was less knowingly baroque/orchestral whatever....

I've had this album forever and barely listened to it - thanks for reminding me of it!

I should've clarified - I'm looking for non-Beach Boys music, as I'm well-versed in that material :) But "Soulful Old Man Sunshine" is one of my favorites!

Ooh, this is great, never heard of this - thanks again!

(Wow, that's a lot of exclamation marks on my part...)

I’ve got to say, I have a lot of respect for Alan and Mark, how they interact with the fans and how they are such big fans themselves. No snide comments about “socks and sandals brigade” like a certain other band’s reissue curators. :)

Since I simply haven't had time to go through every page of this excellent thread on such an excellent band and we're unfortunately not getting these as physical releases...can anyone recommend some great fan made art for when I burn the tracks to cdr?
    Thanks!

In that case I'd recommend letting us know if you run into problems (either in the thread or by PM) as while the downloading process becomes routine relatively quickly, there is a learning curve. :)

Kinda related subject - a Smiley Smile member called PetSmile has contacted Fred Vail about his unreleased country album with Brian Wilson, and is planning to run a campaign to raise $5-6,000 on GoFundMe in order to get the album released.

Hard to believe they couldn't get Brian to throw a couple thousand his way. Unless he doesn't want the record released.

Well, it's only $5 from 1,000 fans, I think we can handle it.

I can't imagine it's that easy. If it's something that is ready to be releases, sans $6,000 worth of work.. why wouldn't Brian put it out? Maybe there's red-tape?

That being said, I'd be happy to donate. I hope it's that easy!!

Maybe these might come out on a 1970 set? Surely if the 1963 Big Beat release had other sessions then this might? then again those 1968 Honeys tracks that Brian did didn't get a look in on the latest 68 set session-wise. Obviously they are on that Honeys anthology.

Does anyone know if there is a compatible and free program to convert FLAC to use in iTunes with a Mac OS X operating system?
