The mix you put in that thread is amazing. It includes parts I’ve never heard. I’m guessing they come from the Made In California set, which I don’t have.

It's not that there's anything wrong with "Cabinessence", of course, but it belongs with the rest of the Smile material, not this later stuff.

Thanks! You did an excellent job here.
Most of the new material here came from the 1968: I Can Hear Music archival download, which is excellent along with the Friends era Wake the World set. Highly recommended for fans of this era.

Back in 1968 2020 seemmed like an unreal prospect... and now we're actually here. Imagine that! I adore both of these records, to be frank. Just unreal how long ago it was that I first heard "Do It Again" on the radio for the first time and picked up my first copy of 20/20. Kinda sad to think how what seemed so unreal in the past now is the present... :sigh: Come to think of it, the song actually deals with time passing in a very profound manner.

If you surround "Cabinessence" with "Cotton Fields" and "Old Folks At Home/"Ol' Man River", it works well, almost a trilogy.

OK, sort of an Americana suite, I can see that.

"I Can Hear Music" was a long time favorite Beach Boy song of mine since I was quite young. I was bummed when I got more into the Beach Boys and realized it's one they didn't write themselves!

Okey. I still have most of their 70's LP to discover before getting into these box sets

Cabinessence should be added to every album. It makes everything better.

Thanks, much appreciated. Like you said, many of the less heard elements are from I Can Hear Music.

New updated version... decided to remove "Ol' Man River" because to me it is too stylistically similar to "Meant For You". And also because it sounds too unfinished. This version clocks in at an hour and I'm quite happy with it.
    1. Meant For You (MIC Version)
    2. Friends
    3. Wake The World
    4. Be Here In The Mornin'
    5. When A Man Needs A Woman
    6. We're Together Again (MIC Version)
    7. Passing By
    8. Anna Lee, The Healer
    9. Little Bird
    10. Be Still
    11. Busy Doin' Nothin'
    12. Diamond Head
    13. Transcendental Meditation
    14. Do It Again (MIC Version)
    15. I Can Hear Music
    16. Bluebirds Over The Mountain
    17. Be With Me
    18. All I Want To Do
    19. The Nearest Faraway Place
    20. Cotton Fields (MIC Single Version)
    21. I Went To Sleep
    22. Time To Get Alone
    23. Never Learn Not To Love
    24. Break Away (MIC Version)
    25. Celebrate The News (MIC Version)

As a longtime Smile enthusiast, I guess that I'm just accustomed to some of their best material being unfinished at times (Love me some "Worms"!). I'd rather hear an evocative, incomplete gem like "Can't Wait Too Long" over a finished dud like "Bluebirds Over The Ocean". But that's just me.

Like I said earlier, I think that Friends holds together well as an independent entity, so I've focused on reconstructing 20/20 with the following playlist:

    Do It Again (stereo remix)
    I Can Hear Music
All I Want To Do (Dennis vocals)
    Time To Get Alone
    Be With Me
    We're Together Again
    Celebrate The News
    Cotton Fields
    Break Away
    Never Learn Not To Love
    I Went To Sleep
    Sail Plane Song
Can't Wait Too Long (using christian42's excellent new mix)
Old Folks At Home/Old Man River

Of course, this is much longer than the standard Beach Boys album, but these are my favorite tracks from the era. It's pretty Brian/Dennis heavy, but it's a little more cohesive, imo, than the album we got back then.

    I preferred the 70s pairings:

    Wild Honey & 20/20
    Friends & Smiley Smile

    Stylistically better matches.

I've had this two-disc set for a while but only listened to it for the first time this week.

My initial reaction (from just a couple of listenings mind you) is that I am somewhat underwhelmed and disappointed, given the high praise heaped on these two albums by not only people on SHF but also the guys who do the Sail On podcast - who admittedly seem very easy to please in matters concerning the Beach Boys.

Friends in particular seems... nice, mellow, but not particularly exciting or interesting, with the exception of "Wake the World" and the two instrumental tracks. I call "Passing By" a "vocal instrumental", and consider it possibly the high point of the album.

20/20 is better but patchy, and feels like a singles compilation album, which Ii suppose it is in part. The three singles that lead off the album are excellent, but I was never a big fan of Cotton Fields - though I'm sure the version that appeared on the Australian release of Sunflower was a different and better mix. Cabinessence, which is perfectly placed on the SMiLE releases, sounds out of place here and just weird as a closing track.

For me however the best song on the whole set, by some margin, is "Break Away", included as one of the "bonus tracks".

So for anyone interested, I decided to revise this recently again too. Not too many changes but removed some more of the unfinished songs. This version clocks in at 1:00:38 which is long enough for a double album (Frank Zappa's Freak Out is only 1:00:27)

    Side A:
    1. Meant For You (MIC)
    2. Friends
    3. Wake The World
    4. Be Here In The Mornin'
    5. When A Man Needs A Woman
    6. We're Together Again (MIC)
    7. Passing By
    Side B:
    1. Anna Lee, The Healer
    2. Little Bird
    3. Be Still
    4. Busy Doin' Nothin'
    5. Diamond Head
    6. Transcendental Meditation
    Side C:
    1. Do It Again (MIC)
    2. I Can Hear Music
    3. Bluebirds Over The Mountain
    4. Be With Me
    5. All I Want To Do
    6. The Nearest Faraway Place
    Side D:
    1. Cotton Fields (The Cotton Song)
    2. I Went To Sleep
    3. Time To Get Alone
    4. Never Learn Not To Love
    5. Can't Wait Too Long (MIC)
