I listened to the SACD of Surf's Up and was really not impressed. The mix had nice detail and stereo placement but was lackluster. I then played the first issue Caribou cd and it blew it to shreds. I followed suit with the SACD of Holland and had the same experience, the Caribou was better by a long shot.
Why there's no AP Friends on vinyl or sacd? I listen that album for 1st time today and I freaking love it!!! wow note: I listen it from a Japan Pastmasters CD rip.
No one knows for sure. Some of us had thought that at least Friends, Wild Honey, 20/20, and Christmas would eventually be released. But unlike the Miles Davis Mofi SACDs, for example, where they would slowly drop titles over the years, there's been not a word. Consider yourself lucky that you have the best digital version of that album.
At the time AP was releasing mono/stereo mixes on one cd. there was no stereo mix of Wild Honey so that was out, and Friends and 20/20 never had a mono mix. why Christmas wasn't included is a mystery indeed.
They also released the mono-only Surfin Safari and the stereo-only Sunflower, Surf's Up, and Holland. The "requirement" of mono/stereo combo doesn't hold. Nobody has any idea why the others weren't included. It's a shame. Those are some of their best albums.
I"m guessing (and I mean guessing) that Wild Honey (my favorite BB album) had tape problems so AP couldn't work with it. After they released what they released Capitol found most (not Mama Says) of the tapes and decided to release the wonderful 2 CD set 1967 Sunshine Tomorrow. I have no such guess for Friends and 20/20 (20/20 being in my BB top 5). I would like all of them to be on SACD. AP had a nice sale and I got Shut Down Vol. 2, Surfin' Safari and Party! for a nice price. I liked the SACDs well enough to start a BB SACD collection, but they must be hybrid so I can play them whereever (the CD layer sounded good too).
With Wild Honey I could understand Capitol maybe wanted to starve the market for Wild Honeys triumphant stereo return (wasnt included in 2012 reissue series either) but I dont get the lack of the other titles. Really hope AP gets a shot at issuing these remaining titles.
I'd love to see Friends, Wild Honey and 20/20 on SACD and vinyl. I'd buy all of them, likely in both formats. For now, the Pastmasters CDs will do.
I also want Carl and Passions and Christmas (mono and stereo). Give us full run thru to Holland.... and then we'll have world peace.
I got the Shut Down Vol. 2 SACD during the same half off sale, and was so impressed that I just ordered Today! Would like to pick these all up eventually.
Having acquired all the SACDs, I started buying DSD downloads so I can have them in hi-res on my Hidizs player.
Edwin, Since you do not allow members to see your profile I have no idea what type of gear you have, however, I assume you have an SACD player. If so, with a DSD recorder you can use the "analog hole" to make DSD copies of your SACD's. I have one of these: http://www.hifiplus.com/articles/tested-teactascam-dv-ra1000hd-high-resolution-digitand lp al-recorder/. I use it to make DSD needle drops of my vinyl. My TASCAM 1000 HD has a hard drive that I record the DSD file to and then I plug my laptop into the TASCAM 1000 HD and pull in the file to the laptop. I can edit the file to include names and LP sides. I then put the file on a thumb drive and plug that into my digital player and listen to a DSD needle drop of my favorite vinyl. Jumping up and down every 10 to 12 minutes to change record sides on a 45 rpm version of an album is not the thing you want to do while trying to eat dinner. The TASCAM I have is no longer in production, however, TASCAM has a new version of the recorder: DA-3000 | FEATURES | TASCAM - United States . It uses smart cards instead of a hard disc to record on, but other than that it works like my old TASCAM 1000 HD. You can get it from Amazon for $800. I am not into portable audio, but if I wanted a DSD copy of my SACD's I would just play the SACD, feed the analog signal into my TASCAM and record it in DSD. The "analog hole".
I would rather have an exact copy of the SACD. My Sony SACD player that rips them was $25. My Oppo was $288. Spending $800 for a TASCAM is a terrible idea for ripping SACDs. Funny that two people actually liked your post.
What's so stupid about playing DSD files off a hard drive now that we have reasonably priced DSD capable DAC's. I'm with you though with regard to the price of SACD gear. I continue to use an ancient Play Station to copy my SACD's.
