The "Big Four" for me are

    Beatles
    Stones
    Kinks
    Who

    followed by

    Small Faces
    The Move
    Pretty Things
    Pink Floyd
    The Moody Blues
    The Creation

    (within a '60s British framework)

I'd make it five; The Beatles, The Who, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and David Bowie.

Make it ten? Okay, then it's The Rolling Stones, The Clash, The Kinks, Black Sabbath and Oasis.

And the Stooges first LP was produced by John Cale---a Welsh Brit.

Stooges, the best rock band not produced by Brits, except for their 1st and 3rd albums.

Well, at least their 2nd album was produced by a non-Brit... ;)

BEATLES, ROLLING STONES... so we're talkin' 60's super bands, you would have to also add THE WHO and THE BEACH BOYS!

    "Where's That Joint?"--The Commander, 67.

Stones yestern, Stones today, Stones tomorrow, Stones Forever. Dr. Bryant made a terrific post on why The Stones are Tops--and I agree especially with the following: "They have ALWAYS been there." With them especially, they transcend rock 'n roll--they are very much embedded in our worldwide pop culture. I rate them over some of the other usual suspects for one reason--they can literally take any genre of music and make it their own, while generally remaining in blues based, groove-centric rock 'n roll.

    Others--

    - John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers--Clapton Era, Green Era, Taylor Era (66-68).
    - David Bowie
    - Small Faces
    - The Beatles
    - Traffic
    - The Kinks
    - The Hollies--always a singles group as opposed to an album-oriented outfit. Distant Light is excellent, but that's post 60s.
    - Manfred Mann--not just all the 60s pop material--gotta have the two outstanding Chapter III albums; he and Mike Hugg created some outstanding if obscure music.
    - Peter Green Era Fleetwood Mac--how did I forget this 'un?!

Since there doesn’t seem to be an overall consensus on the particulars of the list, I need 7...

Beatles, Stones, Dylan, Who, Zep, Clapton (all bands), Springsteen

...but in reality, The Beatles stand alone...
