Undoubtedly problematic, and it was a film I never rated, but it certainly tainted Bertolucci in the last couple of years.

For me The Conformist and Before The Revolution were the two stand outs, and his contribution to the script of Once Upon A Time In The West.

My mother Larisa Shepitko and Bertolucci in 1972. It's incredible that her most underrated movie is called You and Me. And so was Bertolucci's last one. [IMG]

Really great filmmaker. I like his eye and the way he visually constructs scenes. I recently saw Luna for the first time and thought Jill Clayburgh really gave a great performance. Still have 1900 and The Conformist to watch, but I'll get to them soon.

Don't want to hijack the Bertolucci RIP thread but would love to hear your opinion on Wings. Rather difficult movie for a western viewer I guess.

Upon starting, I thought I'd love it, because I love movies about people, but felt there was a bit too much that weren't essential to the story itself, of a woman lost in a new era. I would have liked to see more about her; either her past, but more specifically where she was at now.

I have that on DVD. It is done so well with all of the movie references. It illustrates that they young people have a taste for the classic motion picture arts.

The old joke told about that movie - she told her girlfriend "He said he loved me, that I was beautiful, that I was the only woman for him...then he started buttering me up."

    [QUOTEThe Conformist is a masterpiece[/QUOTE]

My favorite line. (I'll try & remember it correctly)
Wife- "My husband is a very serious man"
Professor- "Very serious men are never serious"

  20. A brilliant director but I could never forgive him for the crap he pulled with (along with Marlon Brando who came up with the idea) in the infamous "butter" scene. Still, a great director human like the rest of us and just as flawed.

Read an article that he continued to grow as a director whereas Nicholas Roeg after "Bad Timing" faded as an important director. I disagree with that assessment and think that Roeg's work needs to be carefully reassessed. They were working with some similar themes but diverged at one point going in different directions. A different road doesn't necessarily mean it is a lesser road to the same destination.

Fair points. I personally love how her past is revealed only in the middle of the film and only in glimpses of memories. To me that's much more striking than the casual storytelling with her background known from the start. The classic falling shot down plane scene would never work as great as it does if the story wasn't told the way it was. Just IMHO of course.

Now let's get back to Bertolucci.

Finally watched The Conformist a few days ago, and really liked it. It didn't have the look/feel of what I think of when I think Bertolucci, seeming more like a Pasolini picture. So I wasn't surprised in the documentary/interview with Bertolucci on the blu-ray to find out he worked with Pasolini before he started doing his own pictures.

    1900 up next.

I think it’s arguably the best looking film ever made. Much richer, visually, than Pasolini, although I haven’t seen all his films.
