This very post amplifies my point very well. The KLH cost close to that $500 in 1968-1970 US Dollars. Not cheap, but then a very nice compact outfit. And sounded very nice.

At the moment $375, $125 should get you some decent speakers or go mad and buy the Wharfedale Diamonds for $175.

Sometimes someone just wants to play some tunes. I'm really enjoying this thread; I would have loved something like the Seed in 1971. It would translate to $90-110 then, with many many times the SQ as the crap thing I bought for $60 in 1968. A set of Fluance Ai40s should have cost a little over $30 in 1971, but any comparison with a $30 product then would be rather hilarious.

@Isamet, do you happen to know what your friend's theoretical setup situation is? I'm assuming he's in a small space; might there just be a small table, etc that it would have to go on, necessitating the all-in-one solution? If he just had even a 4' wide table, he could accommodate separate speakers, but if not...

Perhaps you could link him (with no pressure, of course) something like ol' Craig's review on a prime "separate" candidate.

Plenty of Ai40 or 60 vids as well.

Wow, I fell in love with these $200/pair powered speakers
