Hi guys... I need a list of the very best and worst remasters. I would like to add some titles on my top and flop site.

Any links... or threads. Thanks in advance!

Good page, Claus...reassuring that my German hasn't slipped too far.

    More thoughts:
Black Sabbath's Essential! series remasters from 1996 are good, with the reservations as noted on the Sleeping Village/Remaster of Reality page...
I would say thumbs down to the Astley 1995-1998 Who remaster series from Polydor/MCA (can't comment on the new Tommy SACD, haven't heard it).

The 1993 Columbia remasters (Anesini) are great.

The 2001 Geffen remasters? Not so great.

Yeah I meant the Sonys. I try to block out that I have the Geffen remasters after selling the originals.

    The Geffen remasters are BAD!

The Cat Stevens remasters from Universal are the best. The all time worst, with no exception, the Beatles catalog!!!With the exception of the White Album(which was done well) the Beatles cds are an embarrassment.Other classic groups have redeemed their bad original CDs with better CD AND SACD remasters!!!Shame on Apple!!!

Anyone can suggest Hybrid-SACD's... I mean I have already added Roxy Music, Dylan, Deep Purple, Pink Floyd SACD's on my site. Probably I have missed something...

I'd add Steve's hybrids. CCR's, Zombies, Donovan and Ritchie Valens.
    All  of course.

According to Harry Weinger, neither of those CD's were compressed or maximized. That's the way those masters actually sound. They did actually tone down "Diana" for the deluxe edition release. Both of those albums are dynamic and loud.

I don't think Harry considers the application of look-ahead limiting to be compression, but the net result is that the dynamics wind up compressed. BTW, the Forever Diana box set, which was not done in-house by the Motown folks (it sounds like it was done "outhouse" ;)), deserves a special wing in the hall of shame.

The Buddha "Guess Who" CDs sound great to me. Better than anything I've heard on RCA. I haven't heard the brand new Anthology 2 CD set on RCA.

I was really dissapointed with the sound on 3 CD "The Definitive Collection" on RCA from '97, lifeless and noisy.

I just have to chime in here with the worse remaster series that I've ever heard.

Klaatu 25th Anniversaary remasters on Bullseye (Canada only).

Horrid compressed, pathetic excuse for a CD. Ask anyone who has one!

  23. You're not kidding about the Guess Who "Definitive Collection". That had to be one of the worst remastering jobs I've ever heard - all kinds of weird compression/EQ on that one. I sold those discs on ebay as soon as I could. I agree that the Buddha remasters are good but I wish they had redone "Wheatfield Soul". I haven't heard a decent version of Wheatfield on CD yet. :sigh:

The older Capitol (US) 2fer CD Klaatu/Hope sounds pretty good.
