My opinion is that if the person (or one of the persons) who wrote a song does a version later, or even participates in the recording of a later version (I'm aware that I'm probably alone on that second category), it's not a cover version. For example, I don't consider a Pete Townshend solo version of a song he wrote that was originally recorded by The Who to be a cover version. I don't consider The Ramones version of Substitute to be a cover either, since Townshend himself plays on it. But I know practically everyone else considers that to be a straight-up cover.
