Thanks I saw that and preordered it the moment it was up. Now I want "Wise Blood" on either Blu-ray or 4k.

Wise Blood is out in the U.K. if you’re region free (not sure if the disc is locked or not).

I just saw Peter Bogdanovich's Saint Jack (1979) the other night. Filmed on location in Singapore and featuring many of the local citizens in speaking roles, the film is authentic and exciting. Highlighted by a fantastic lead performance from Ben Gazzara; I'd consider it a masterpiece.

Kramer vs Kramer was my favorite film of that year, but I've seen The Life of Brian twice. Always look on the bright side of life.

There were a lot of excellent films that year that year and some
superior films, which some of you listed.

If I had to choose the best films of the year they would be

    Apocalypse Now
    Being There
    The Black Stallion
    Manhattan
    Tess

Tess, Manhattan and Apocalypse Now are the towering giants of 1979.

    But my favorites are:

    Apocalypse Now
    The Black Stallion
    Heartland
    Manhattan
    Murder By Decree
    Star Trek: The Motion Picture
    Starting Over
    Tess
    The Wanderers

And the rest in my order of preference today:

    Stalker
    Being There
    All That Jazz
    The In-Laws
    Apocalypse Now
    The Warriors
    The Life of Brian
    Nosferatu

It turns out there's still a lot of films repeated on these lists I've never seen. So there's something to look forward to in the future.

I hadn't seen ALL THAT JAZZ since one of my film classes in undergrad and figured I'd watch it again: a bravura piece of filmmaking. Fosse definitely wasn't afraid to put his personal flaws onscreen, and a career topping performance from Roy Scheider.

It was only released in 1978 in Italy, under the title Zombie. It wasn't released anywhere else until Spring 1979 (as Dawn of the Dead).

    You are correct.
Dawn of the Dead was released in Italy in 1978.
That makes it a 1978 film.

Yet a being There didn’t even get a mention. A brilliant film that holds up remarkably well. Neither did Alien.
