Simon Nicol (g) and Dave Pegg (b) in Fairport Convention, with Richard Thompson and in many other side projects from 1970 onwards.
Wow. Some excellent listings here. Many I agree with whole heartedly. So many more overlooked. I noticed a few of my favorites haven’t been mentioned yet so I will list these pairings: Jethro Tull’s - Martin Barre / Glenn Cornick / Jeffery Hammond/ John Glascock Wishbone Ash - Andy Powell and Ted Turner / Martin Turner
I'd rate Joe Satriani and the unspectacular-but-plays-well-with-others Michael Anthony (happy birthday) in Chickenfoot as second to Vai and Billy Sheehan in David Lee Roth's band, which someone astutely mentioned already.
I have been listening to some old unofficial or whatever Led Zeppelin recordings.Jone Paul Jones had great chemistry with Jimmy Page.It is even more obvious from the consistently together one night to the next.
Jerry Cantrell/Mike Starr = Alice In Chains John Squire/Mani = The Stone Roses Mark Collins/Martin Blunt = The Charlatans
Pete Townshend / John Entwistle Derek Bailey / Dave Holland Sonny Sharrock / Sirone Bob Dylan / Tony Garnier Pete Cosey / Michael Henderson
You know they're talking about King Crimson, right? Maybe Tony Levin could count, but I think he and Adrian had more magic than did he and Fripp. YMMV Fripp/Wetton
Al Di Meola & Stanley Clarke Leo Nocentelli & George Porter, Jr. Frank Zappa & Tom Fowler John Goodsall & Percy Jones Duane Allman/Dickey Betts & Berry Oakley
In the grand scheme, Howe and Squire are so superlative that any other combination must be an afterthought. That said, I’m still partial to Kath/ Cetera.
I’ll say it again…. IOMMI/BUTLER a wall of sound unmatched. Not only do you have the greatest riff master of all time with Tony Iommi , but Geezer Butler could also come up with some great riffs and was also one of the great bassists . He also provided lyrics to match the dark riffs .
Pat Metheny & Steve Rodby, although I think you could make the case that Metheny is really locking in with Lyle Mays.
