I finally received my copy of the new Deerhoof release, Future Teenage Cave Artists, a post apocalyptic sci-fi concept album no less, and I have to say that they really pull it off. It's only 36 minutes, but it's so packed full of ideas that it's satisfying and rich. The production has this uniquely warped, wobbly ambience that suits the music uncannily. An off kilter gem. It took me a while to warm up to this band, but at their best they some manage to be insanely catchy and boldly experimental at the same time. Try my sci-fi Why yes, thank you!
Just got the new Spector record on green vinyl today, and it’s definitely my favorite record of the year so far. Sounds great too.
Out of nowhere (well, actually Melbourne Australia) this week, I've stumbled onto a band called Bananagun with a just-released debut album titled The True Story of Bananagun that blends psychedelic rock, Brazilian pop and world music into something wonderfully indescribable - and very cool and here's their (mostly) instrumental single "People Talk Too Much"
Loving this record.. agree - it is packed with ideas, and dare I say grooves... It feels like they tried to make a more groovy Deerhoof record + a yes to the "warped wobbly ambience".
Though it has been a little bit more "few and far between" for this years thread for recommendations I've been interested in I'm still appreciative of everyone's efforts to inform
Yes outstanding record. Subtle instrumentation reveals itself over a few listens too. It just grows on you
Happy 4th of July! Listening to Weyes Blood's T.R. To Be Surrounded By Beautiful, Curious, Breathing, Laughing Flesh Is Enough, by Deerhoof
Boris - No Drone, noise, punk, down tuned stomp, you know, Boris. But this is up there with their best, raging and waaayyy in the red. Streaming only right now on Bandcamp. This and the new one by Hum are satisfying my heavy-osity needs just fine right now.
Cloud Nothings - The Black Hole Understands Stripped down as far as the noise goes, a lovely power pop charge runs through this one, tuneful as hell and might be one of their best. Bandcamp stream.
I actually like the new Alan Parsons album “The Secret”. Yes it’s very mellow popish but I find it enjoyable .
Bitch, bitch, bitch, moan, moan, moan but I actually like posting that say why they like the release, why it interests them, what style is is etc. etc. etc.
According to their website it's not new material but a compilation of their EPs from 2017-2019 named Non-Fiction.
We are now 5 days past the midway point of 2020. With lots of time off due to some surgery, complications, COVID raising its ugly little head, furlough, unemployment and job change I was a busy boy this year on the new music side with 207 albums added to my library since January 1st. Of those 33 titles are new releases from 2020. Most of those are from new/newer artists that are either the first album or maybe a second album I have by them. There are just a couple of "tried and true" artist albums such as Bob Dylan, Steve Earle and Lucinda Williams. Here are a few that at this point are my personal best of 2020. Wow 207 new albums in about 180 days . How are you able to process that much music? I would find that intimidating .
It is a high number for me but as much a matter of circumstances. I had surgery and recovery at the end of February followed by one week of work followed by job furlough followed by 2-3 months of sitting on my ass with nothing to do.
Container by The Wants might be my favorite of the year so far. I stumbled onto it by accident and have been hooked ever since.
Hopefully, at some point this year, the Radio Dept. will collect all these singles they've been releasing into a full length, and it will surely be one of the best of the year for many of us, below the brilliant cover of the Tri-Lites "You're Looking at My Guy", with the also quite brilliant original on the flip side, "Could You Be the One" ... Well I think you landed on the perfect medicine! I do lean on music in the rough times quite heavily and she has always embraced me warmly. .,, I hope the year ends better for you then it started..
