The last time we went down this road, no one could agree what was New Wave or Post Punk. Since you included both it may be easier.

There are so many bands that scrambled to attempt to fit the genre - and as a result it’s a big tent....but I will focus at the beginning -

Our shore: Devo [Q: Are We Not]; across the pond: Echo [Ocean Rain]

It can be confusing - especially when people refer to something like the first Jam record as post-punk even though it came it out in the same year('77) as a lot of seminal punk records

I've pointed out in the past that RYM shows the first post-punk release pre-dating the first punk-rock release. Pere Ubu.

First you would have to define New Wave and Post Punk. It has been attempted and miserably failed around here many times. I decline.

I personally believe the first post-punk record is Ultravox

And it's from the very start of 1977 - the genre started before punk died.

Blondie have always been the archetypal New Wave band for me. Parallel Lines and Eat to the Beat are two of my very favorite albums ever.

    Television - Marquee Moon
The Only Ones - Even Serpents Shine
    Unknown Pleasures - Joy Division

( A couple of names mentioned by other members: I don't consider Elvis Costello as part of this genre, he's a singer/songwriter! Echo And The Bunnymen: alt rock.)

I think it's nigh on impossible to define post-punk/new wave.
