They were not only friends, U2's The Edge (David Evans) and Virgin Prunes' Dik (Richard Evans) are brothers. Also, the kid on U2's Boy and War albums is the younger brother of the Prunes' Guggi.

I’d really like to hang out with all of the posters here. Most people have no clue about these artists, songs and albums which are one of my very favorite genres.

To my friends and me, "New Wave" included everything from late pub rock (Graham Parker, Rockpile, Ian Dury) to mod-revival to neo-ska to the New Romantics to U2's Boy—and much of what is now considered post-punk. For me the "New Wave" label stopped meaning much after about 1982, with the advent of R.E.M. and later the flourishing of the Minneapolis scene. But I'm pretty sure I thought of all these as "New Wave"/post-punk at the time:
    • Pere Ubu: The Modern Dance (plus the Datapanik in the Year Zero EP)
    • The Jam: All Mod Cons
    • Television: Marquee Moon
    • Talking Heads: More Songs About Buildings and Food
    • Graham Parker & The Rumour: Heat Treatment
    • Elvis Costello & The Attractions: This Year's Model (plus everything else through wherever you think his New Wave period ends—I'd say Trust, maybe Imperial Bedroom)
    • Nick Lowe: Jesus of Cool / Pure Pop for Now People
    • Wire: Pink Flag
    • Gang of Four: Entertainment
    • Blondie: Parallel Lines
    • The Modern Lovers: The Modern Lovers (grandfathered in)
    • XTC: Black Sea
    • Young Marble Giants: Colossal Youth
    • Ian Dury: New Boots and Panties!!
    • Squeeze: Argybargy
Obviously there's no musical coherence to this group, but they did indeed feel like a wave at the time.

If we're going to call a record released in ’89 "new wave," I'd also throw in The Mekons Rock ’n Roll.

    i don't want to pigeonhole and i think it's a hard thing to lump it all together, what i can say is that many bands mentioned in this thread are favorites of mine so i would just like to add;

    The Jesus Lizard
    and
    Helmet

Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures, Closer
XTC - Go 2, Drums And Wires, Black Sea, English Settlement
The Cure - Boys Don’t Cry, Seventeen Seconds, Faith
The Stranglers - Black And White, The Raven, The Gospel According To The Meninblack
Simple Minds - Life In A Day, Reel To Real Cacophony, Empires And Dance, Sons And Fascination/Sister Feelings Call
    Buzzcocks - Singles Going Steady
The Police - Regatta De Blanc, Zenyatta Mondatta, Ghost In The Machine
U2 - Boy, October, WarThe Cure - Boys Don’t Cry, Seventeen Seconds, Faith
Talking Heads - More Songs About Buildings And Food, Fear Of Music, Remain In Light
The Sound - Jeopardy, From The Lions Mouth, All Fall Down
    Gang Of Four - Entertainment!
Echo And The Bunnymen - Heaven Up Here, Porcupine, Ocean Rain
Siouxsie And The Banshees - Juju

Somehow I can’t quite picture The Clash, Costello or Joe Jackson being post-punk. Too diverse and out-there in a way.
(But then again I don’t have trouble mentioning Talking Heads. Go figure...)

I do feel very tempted to mention Bowie and Iggy.

We're not calling the Mekons New Wave because they aren't but they are 1 of 3 best original late 1970s Punk & Post-Punk artists...

With that being said almost any Mekons qualifies , I just selected my preferences...

After the Pistols broke down all barriers & made anything possible in music , the Mekons have held true to that freedom as much as Pere Ubu...

Both groups embody the very essence of Post-Punk even 40+ years later

There are a couple of artists listed here who aren’t exactly descended from punk, but I think all of these releases fit at least one of the two genres listed.

Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures, Closer
Talking Heads - Remain In Light, Speaking In Tongues, Little Creatures, Fear of Music
    The Police - full discography
New Order - Power, Corruption, and Lies; Low-Life
    Peter Gabriel - 3, 4, So
David Bowie - Low, “Heroes”, Scary Monsters
The Clash - London Calling, Combat Rock
    King Crimson - Discipline, Beat
    U2 - War
The Smiths - The Queen is Dead
Iggy Pop - Lust For Life
    Violent Femmes - S/T
Rush - Signals, Grace Under Pressure, Power Windows, Hold Your Fire
Tears For Fears - Songs From the Big Chair, The Hurting
The Waterboys - This Is the Sea
    Television - Marquee Moon

If Lust for Life and The Idiot are considered post-punk/new wave, does that mean that Bowie's Low and 'Heroes' should be as well as they are so obviously linked? As the RCA adverts said at the time 'There's old wave, there's new wave, and then there's David Bowie'!

i actually think the stooges were pre punk punk and bowie is bowie as no one else is bowie if that makes any sense (because it's that time of the night)

It makes perfect sense to me! Also, I guess the term 'new wave' implies new 1977-80 artists.
