Well, it’s been a little longer than I expected between postings. Sorry for that. We're still working out some bugs here. Last week’s title Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys didn’t really stir up much controversy or many postings. I think the unanimous opinion was the MOFI version is the best. If you disagree with the current winner you can still weigh in on this one. To see the list or add a comment, just go to The Best Of The Best in the archive section on the Home page. I’ll be checking weekly and will update the list as needed.

This week’s title is a perennial favorite among audiophiles and as there are numerous versions on both LP and CD I am anxious to see which version you feel is the best.

Pink Floyd - Dark Side Of The Moon - Harvest 11163

    Like Arnie, I'll be back.

For cd only it would hsve to be MFSL's UD1 version, even though it has boosted bottom and slight top it still shuts down every other cd version that I've ever heard and that would be around 5.

Contreversy...isn't that a song by Prince? I digress...

I have compared the MoFi UD1 version of DSOTM against the 1992 (or current) Columbia/Harvest remaster version of DSOTM. They are both superior in their own respect (please see my complete comparison in the archives) but I choose the 1992 remaster as the one CD to live with.

IMHO, overall it has a much more balanced sound with respect to frequency and has a wider soundstage. Volume levels are basically identical to the MoFi, but lacks some of the midrange resolve of the MoFi (noticeable on Great Gig In The Sky when the vocals "merge" into the piano). ;)

    DaveB,

Wasn't it Steves version of The Who: Who's Next that won the debate?;)

Best DSOTM for me is MoFi lp 1-017 JVC pressing :)

Last's week's BOB was for Traffic, not Who's Next. :)

HZ- D'oh! Sometimes I wonder how I make it through the day without hurting myself. You are right. I will correct my post. Thanks!

I really like the Japanese Pro-Use CD that I have. Sounds flat to my ears, compared to the MoFi which seems to have it's bass boosted a bit.

Now interestingly, the Pro-Use CD sounds completely different from the Pro-Use LP. The LP, while being a VERY clean pressing, has TONS of extra bass, and the top end is lacking a bit (on my TT rig, of course).

    I don't have the currently released/remastered version, so I can't compare.

Does anyone have all three? How do they compare?

I have 11 different versions of this album, for it is my Holy Grail.

The best CD version I've heard that is an "official" release is the MoFi UD1 by a slight margin over the Japanese Harvest CD.

The UD1 has a better Dynamic Range and is just a bit smoother than the Japanese Harvest CD.

The Current Remaster is good but is compressed quite a bit. There's at least a 3-4db difference in Dynamic range between the remaster and the MoFi UD1

There's a Japanese remaster in LP packaging that sounds great too. It's most likely the same master, but like most Toshiba/EMI Japanese pressings...it sounds better than its USA counterpart.

I have both Dolby Digital and dts CDs from two separate Quad mixes of this album -- the dts CD gets the nod for quality.

I also have a CDR that is a great needle drop from the MoFi UHQR LP -- lots of bass in this one, good bass though, not thumpy bass.

If I had to pick just one to listen to it would probably be the dts Quad mix, but the MoFi UD1 wins for stereo only.

No more opinions on this one? I'm surprised.
