Loverboy opening for Journey 1981. Just kidding... Probably Big Audio Dynamite and Public Enemy opening for U2 in Birmingham, AL in 1992.
Khruangbin opened for Leon Bridges - Sept. 2018, St. Paul, MN. Still really like Leon Bridges, but Khruangbin became a huge favorite as result.
Hmm.... I saw Sheryl Crow open for the Eagles [and I liked her set better...] I saw Elvis Costello open for Bob Dylan I saw the Black Crows opening for Tom Petty I just caught the end of Nick Lowe opening for Tom Petty [we were late to the show.. ] ... and lots of others to be remembered at a later date...
I saw Shriekback support INXS and was blown away (enjoyed INXS as well). So much that me and my brother went to see them again at a Qld Uni sideshow the next night. Lost some of their on-stage theatrics but my god they had everyone inside!
Sonny Landreth opening for Southside Johnny, Town and Country, London in the late 80s early 90s. Curse of Lomo opening for Chuck Prophet at the Sage, Gateshead 2017
Re: Sonny Landreth His mate John Beland (Ex Flying Burrito Brothers) rates his slide work up with that of Ry Cooder. He told me this a few years ago as we sat together at a private wedding in Brisbane.
It was just him and his guitar for half an hour or so. It was jaw dropping and I bought his current CD in the foyer that night. I'm not a guitarist but I could see he was something else. Out of curiosity, was there any live music at the wedding you attended?
You bet, it was solely the duo of John and his young Aussie girlfriend songwriter/vocalist of the time. Unfortunately I cannot recall any songs they played (I remember far more about all the conversations we had over the course of a few hours) but I remember a concert poster from Vancouver 1995 (I was backpacking) of Sonny Landreth opening for Buddy Guy. Sadly I learned this later that same night!
Brilliant Yes, I've had a few of those just too late experiences. I remember wandering Edinburgh for an evening killing time only to find out the next morning John Hiatt had been on at a local theatre.
Greatest opening act ever must have been cheap trick. They were opening for I think Peter Frampton who was a no-show and play the entire concert two and a half hours by themselves no break.
Saw Sebastian Hardie open for Yes in 2003 , I didn’t know they were on the bill so it was a pleasant surprise .
The Hooters opening for a coked-out Stevie Nicks in 1990. Ratt opening for Billy Squier. Public Enemy opening (co-headlining) for The Sisters of Mercy. Winger opening a festival show with Poison and Cinderella. Blew me away how tight they were. Winger deserves much more respect than they get.
Stray opening for Mountain in Helsingborg. Can’t remember the date. Early 2000’s? Anyway Stray was very good and in good mood!
I saw the Cardiacs opening for Marillion in London in the mid 80s, they were fantastic. Would like to have seen a longer set, and have collected whatever I could of theirs afterwards.
Robert Plant opened for the Who at Jones Beach. I've never seen an opening act so completely own the stage. Both bands put on great shows.
I saw that same tour in Worcester, MA. at The Centrum(4 August, 1985). Johnny was on his "A" game that night. The arena was about a 1/3 full, and Winter played like his ass was on fire. Thorogood had a tough time recapturing the audience after a blistering set by Johnny. Nevertheless, George did all right. One thing that stuck in my head was Winter's drummer had a huge assed double bass, a gagillion cymbals set.
The only one that ever comes to mind is The Marshall Tucker Band who I loved with The Charlie Daniels Band opening who I was mostly indifferent towards. It is not that MT didn't play well Charlie just blew the roof off the place.
