Fantastic stills all through this thread.

Have to include The Bicycle Thief (aka Bicycle Thieves) too, though:

I assume that is a mound of buffalo skulls? If so, here is the "inspiration" for that shot:

I wish this picture was fictional, but rather it is a testament to the colossal destruction by man of nature. It was primarily (though not exclusively) the buffalo hunters who hunted bison almost to the point of extinction. Buffalo tongue was considered a delicacy, so the other 99% of the carcass was left to rot on the great western plains. This kind of rape of nature is par for the course . . . if there is money to be made.

Love this film. I lived for a year in what used to be called Tiger Bay (which has now been heavily redeveloped and rebranded as 'Cardiff Bay').

There's a train line connecting Cardiff Bay with central Cardiff; The newer part, heavily redeveloped with 'luxury flats' (unaffordable for most previous residents) on one side, and the older part 'Butetown', on the other; Butetown retains some of the feel of the film, remaining one of the poorest and most multi-racial districts of Cardiff.

Many of the old buildings in Butetown were demolished long ago in a 'slum clearance' scheme and replaced with new homes and several high rise blocks of flats.

Incidentally, Butetown can be seen in many modern episodes of BBC's Doctor Who and Casualty (Older episodes of Casualty were filmed in Bristol), with a large BBC Studio on the edge of Cardiff Bay used for the non-location scenes.
