Many from BARRY LYNDON, which was designed to look like a series of paintings:

I loved this scene because it's such a true depiction of what goes on, "let's get that grip an grin."

William Friedkin's way-underrated SORCERER. First the scene from the first DVD released in the late 90s, a 4:3 pan'n'scan transfer:

In 2014, Friedkin and WB had the movie remastered, now full widescreen, and the coloration of this image had changed. Which is correct? I'd assume Friedkin knew what he wanted, but we also saw what he'd done to THE FRENCH CONNECTION before fixing it.

    Nevertheless, and iconic image.

i started getting sensitive about posting shots that might possibly spoil the ending .... ymmv of course, as so many are classics. it's a fantastic shot for sure!

That's a fair point. It's probably good to lean toward caution. Good self control on your part to leave it out for this reason!

The ending of this film is fairly ambiguous, and there's no central mystery to be solved. (There's a great twist, but I wouldn't characterize it as resolving a puzzle.) As for the final shot, the character might have reacted this way regardless of the outcome of his final personal riddle. So I don't think it gives anything away. But as you noted, maybe best to be careful.

this is almost the shot.....where the background sky resembles (is?) a blurred matte painting, probably just a consequence of the depth of focus, but lending the effect of
    romanticized abstraction
Bring Me The Head Of Alfredo Garcia (1974)
Once again, I really like the second still as well so it is included

To this day, and after countless viewings, I still don't get why Michael firt told Fredo that they had a plane waiting, and then told him that he knew it was Fredo. Just doesn't make sense. Like he didn't know Fredo would run?

Still my second most favorite after 1.
