MiniDenny here is a thought! Select the best 10 R&R bands and do a poll (on "Off Topic") and see the results! OK?

Like the Beatles, Stones, the Who, etc., etc.

We can all put comments on the poll, too. With out r opinions on WHY we think band X is the best.

I look forward to your poll!

    :)

The Beatles is, of course, the correct answer

    Hi MiniDenny,

I'm just a new member but I couldn't help but notice that you are active here.
Can't fault your taste in music. How does one get promoted to Junior Member?

    Keep up the good work.

    John

    The only answer is...

    The Rolling Stones.

The Beatles were more of a a pop band with nice cute poppy songs. They did a few songs that would be in the rock and roll category. The Stones were evil dirty rock and roll. Imagine the Beatles doing Gimme Shelter or Can't You Hear Me Knocking, I can't even think about it.

Is this your own opinion or did you get it from your dad?

Nah, just kidding. They're my favorite too!

Then, looking at the subject decade by decade, my favorites are:

    50s--Chuck Berry
    60s--You know who
70s--Neil Young (as I've said before)
    80s--Prince(ditto)
90s--started with Pavement, moved to Beck, ended with Sleater-Kinney or Old 97's. Terrible decade.

But the Stones doing When I'm 64 is a dream scenario, right?

    Hi John,

On behalf of all Toronto members, welcome.
As your number of posts increase you will be promoted to Junior Member (10?), then to Member, Senior Member etc. all the way to Grand Wazoo. Don't know the exact numbers of posts per promotion. Holy Zoo can you help out?

    Your fellow Torontonian
    :D

    What the Rolling Stones???

    The Beatles for sure.

If the Beatles had decided to limit themselves to gritty rock/R'n B, they would have had people burning the streets down not just singing about it. But. they were much more than that.

The Stones never succeeded in leaving their field of music (Satanic Majesties was another cringeworthy attempt to ape the Beatles). After some failures the Stones returned to what they do best (and they are good at it) with Honky Tonk Woman. As long as they don't steer too far away from their range, they're fine Start Me Up, Satisfaction, Get Off Of My Cloud etc. Don't get me wrong, I love that stuff.

Listen to the vocals on Rock and Roll Music (John) or Long Tall Sally (Paul). Mick could not touch either of them for sheer Rock 'n Roll. But as I said, the Beatles were so much more.

Also the media image of cute cuddly Moptops was highly misleading. John Lennon could be meaner and tougher than any Stone. Remember they "grew up" in Hamburg - one tough place.

I could go on, and probably will later. Bye.

I know they did Sugar Sugar, but did they also do Yummy Yummy Yummy I've Gove Love In My Tummy (Rod Stewart's theme)? Sorry, this idea got axed elsewhere, so I had to include it here.

    Don't knock the Archies

The Archies is the only band where none of the members went on to tarnish their image.
Like the post '66 Beatles they never toured and devoted their time to the recording studio to perfect their sound.

    Who vs. Stones

The Who are better than the Stones. Anyone else notice this? Who's Next is way better than any album the Stones ever put out.

Welcome John B. from the Pacific Ocean but still in Canada! It's all just personal preference anyways. It's really too hard to pick just one of the many great bands out there.;)

Thanks Dave and Tangent how does one get promoted to Forum Furniture?
True - there are many great bands out there but we must have our preferences. How about Monkees versus Archies?

Not at all. IMO live R&B influenced rock and roll is all about guitar playing and they had it covered like no one else.Mick Taylor is an outstanding allaround player. If theres a better rythym player than Keith Richards I'd like to know about it.Charlie Watts, all those Stones songs and my favorite, when they did Chuck Berry tunes.I saw them in 69,72,74,their peak.I went to a lot of concerts and they always seemed the most cohesive as a band.I saw Mick Taylor last summer and he's still on top of it.
