I admire bands who stay together through thick and thin....or who go out in a blaze of glory (or sadness in some cases) but leave their mark in musical history...preferably without replacing original/classic line ups.

Bands of Brothers (and sisters) for me would include:

    Beatles
    U2
    REM
    Pixies
    Queen
    Smiths
    Blur
    Stone Roses
    Doors
    Led Zeppelin
    Jimi Hendrix Experience
    Nirvana

Also honorary mentions for XTC, Sonic Youth, The Rolling Stones and The Who
    :)

    Re: Don't knock the Archies

I was under the impression that the Archies were actually one man doing all the instruments with hired backup session singers. Anyone concur?

No Kirshner hired several musicians and one vocalist for the Archies. I forget his name but I saw him at a Rhino festival. He sang a number of pop hits.

This is an impossible question to answer (THE WHO) and it is very difficult for me to even dignify it with a response (THE BEATLES). I don't know why (LED ZEPPELIN) we spend our time (QUEEN) banging our collectives heads (THE BAND) against the perverbial wall (THE ROLLING STONES) on such matters. There, I have said my peace.

The Archies were a studio group created by Don Kirshner.

Ron Dante was the lead singer!

Which rhythm section? I like Billy Cox/Mitch Mitchell - great live stuff! Too bad they never got to finish "Rising Sun" properly...

    Yeah, I'm sorry too.

I like the first version of the band, but the later incarnations were fine with me as well...

    Same for The Crickets...;)

There's no question that, at the height of their powers, the Stones were devastating. But, like, ENOUGH ALREADY - they should have packed it in during the '80's!

The best/greatest rock and roll band is a band that more than likely no one has ever heard of. Something like "The Sting Rays" from c.1963/64 Woodbridge Virginia, or "The Fair Winds" from c.1967/68 Newark? Delaware. There's one now a quarter mile away across from me in an old country house who bang and clang to all hours of the night. My guess is they're doomed to obscurity too.

Like so many questions, this one has no one answere, let alone definative! And since it was stated as band, not performer.
So here we go by decade:

50's The Platters ok they were not a band, but a vocal group so then how about, Bill Haley and the Comets
60's My vote would be the Animals, then the Stones, both very good at the basic R&R sound!
70's A tuff one, more pop than rock existed here so maybeLed Zepplin,
they did excellent blues sped up, is that not what R&R really is!
80's Even tougher decade, maybe Little Steven and the Disciples of Soul, more a Stevie Van Zandt solo, but it is a band, and a great gritty R&R one at that.
90's Getting tougher, so how about U2, not really the best over all (by true R&R standards) but they do it with that basic structured sound that R&R is
and now, well who knows, the decade is young!

Now if you said best rock and roll performer:
Elvis, Van Morrison, Everly Bros, Dion, Tommy James, Billy Idol, Bo Didley, CHuck Berry (especially CB, he for the most part really is the father of R&R), Jimi Hendrix, etc, etc, etc, and the list go's on!

The best may well be(from where I stand) QUEEN.
Superb musicians who I believe were very unfairly trashed in the 70s and 80s.Those guys could all write(They are the only band to have each member write a U.K. Top 10 hit),they could be dabble in different styles of music and still be unmistakeably QUEEN.They wrote and performed some of the most melodically pretty songs of the 70s (Nevermore,Somebody To Love,Millionaire's Waltz ) to
some of the the hardest rock(Father To Son,Son And Daughter,Stone Cold Crazy,Tie Your Mother Down) to just the plain silly(Bring Back That Leroy Brown).Brian May's guitar tone and style are unmistakeable and his greater interest in the overall sound of the song rather than just letting rip with a flurry of flashy fret-wanking was/is admirable(the only other guitarist you could say that about was Lindsey Buckingham another superb and under-rated guitarist who could play rings around most of his contemporaries but didn't).Who else would have performed songs like Bicycle Race,I'm In Love With My Car,Fat Bottomed Girls,Mustapha. Finally probably the greatest prog-rock single of all time(even though it's not seen that way)Bohemian Rhapsody,it has everything in it,humour, melody ,mock opera and heavy rock, all inside 6 mins, hell it usually takes that long for Keith Emerson to find the ON switch to his keyboard rig.I say this as someone whose is NOT a diehard Queen fan but someone who gave this question a bit of thought A Steve Hoffman mastered version of Queen 2 would certainly be greatly appreciated,it's probably their most "produced" album ,it's very dense sounding and Brian May and many Queen fans pick of their fave album.

    Michael I LOVE WIDE S-T-E-R-E-O!

    B E A T L E S.

I also love the Rolling Stones but....
If it weren't for the BEATLES the Rolling Stones would still be in Liverpool!
No comparison! They got them their RECORD DEAL with DECCA. The Stones didn't have the same writing skills and Lennon & McCartney wrote their first song; I believe was "I Wanna Be Your Man".

Well for me rock'n'roll was a musical form of the 1950's which evolved into pop in the 60s and then rock in the later 60s and beyond.

So rock'n'roll will always mean, to me, a musical form based around good ol' 12 bar and could've been invented by Chuck Berry simply by speeding up the blues.

The Beatles of course played plenty of rock'n'roll at first but what made them so great is that they moved away from that limited style and created something far more interesting.

The Stones played more rock'n'roll but whether they were the best, who knows!

If I could go back in time and see one band play live, I would like to see Lynyrd Skynyrd (with Steve Gaines). They may not have been the world's greatest musicians, but they were a great BAND.

Second choice, "The Band" before the drugs and booze destroyed them.

    Just my two cents...

I couldn't let this thread go another minute without someone mentioning The Ramones. So I say, The Ramones!

Obviously, we all know it's really The Beatles ;) but The Ramones deserve to be mentioned!
