  1. Me too. I like the production of the entire album, conceding that some of the choir sections in the AHMS can get tedious. Also count me in as a lover of an edited Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast that cuts back on the sound effects (not all of 'em though). My song rankings for AHM:

    Fat Old Sun
    Summer of '68
    Atom Heart Mother Suite
    Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast
    If

I like all the songs -even If is very nice.

My ranked in order top 10 Pink Floyd Albums:

    Dark Side Of The Moon
    Wish You Were Here
    Animals
    The Wall
    Meddle
Piper At The Gates of Dawn
    Atom Heart Mother
    A Saucerful Of Secrets
    Obscured By Clouds
    The Final Cut

Maybe replaced by an alternative universe electric version of Embryo?

Really hard to pick between Summer '68 and FOS. I went with Summer '68.

Wow, no love for "If"? That would be my pick. I have a bootleg of a "Pros and Cons" show, with Roger doing it. Love it. Also love Summer 68 and Fat Old Sun. But I'm one of those "Roger guys", I guess, so "If" takes it for me.

On the British cassette version of this album that I used to own, 'If' actually appeared twice.

Where in the track listing/side would the 2 appear?

Guess they had to fill up that blank space with something. My cassette copy of Animals had Pigs fading out at the end of Side 1 and fading back in on Side 2.

That was the case and the reason. However, I remember feeling conned by the same 'If' appearing twice. The cassette was my first exposure to the album and I thought it was going to be If (part 1) and then If (part 2).

Summer '68 is to me one of the best showcases of Wright's astonishing musicianship... being the main composer (including the vocal melodies) of that literally stellar track.

P.S.: Just listened to Summer '68 again. What a bliss!

"Atom Heart Mother" for the win. I think it's shamefully underrated even by the band. It's brilliant.

"Summer '68" is pleasant enough. Doesn't sound so pleasant for the girl. The tone of the song is basically, "How the hell did YOU get in my bed?" "Stay" from OBC is another of these.

"If" is probably my least favorite Floyd song. Roger shouldn't try to be romantic, it's all wrong.

"Fat Old Sun" is terrific live but the studio version leaves something to be desired.

"Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast" needs more animal noises. Or something.

    I disagree.
"If I were a good man, I would understand the spaces between friends" is quite an honest line.
And the 2 lines about going insane, and putting wires in his brain, and hoping to still be allowed to play, allude to his writing on Dark Side. And perhaps already addressing Syd, way before Shine On.
There's a lot more going on in that little song than just Rog trying to be romantic.

"Atom Heart Mother" is my favorite, particularly in magnificent, mind-bending quad. Side two is more of a mixed bag. I enjoy "Summer of '68" and "Fat Old Sun", though as noted above, the live versions of the latter are superior. "Psychedelic Breakfast" is a quirky novelty track with some nice moments, but "If" does nothing for me.

Oh yeah, I get that there's allusions to future work, I'm just saying that most of that song gives me the cringe. That one line you quoted is the best line in the whole song.

The thing is, I think he IS trying to do a sort of romantic, here-I-am-with-all-my-flaws-will-you -still-love-me sort of thing. It's a bit too personal.

I love the entire album and as much as I would like to throw a vote to Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast (some of Rick Wright's most inspired playing in final part imo), the title suite is my very favorite thing they ever did, any version.

Talking about the top 10 Floyd albums, I'd say:

    1. "Wish You Were Here"
    2. "Animals"

    4. "The Wall"
    5. "Ummagumma" - Live Album
    6. "A Saucerful Of Secrets"
    7. "Atom Heart Mother"
    8. "The Piper At The Gates Of Down"
    9. "A Momentary Lapse Of Reason"
    10. "The Division Bell"

This album sux. I listened with an open mind today. The horns get more time than the electric guitar. WTH? For this album & Ummagumma, did David just lose interest? There's barely any electric playing by him on both albums.
This album is as boring as the cover. Absolute rubbish album.
There's your hot music opinion of the day.

    Summer 68 here

The title track to me sounds very Zappa/The Mothers without the insane musical intricacies.

Quad is the way to listen to this album now, get it while you can.
