GOODFELLAS came out in 1990 so it sneaks into the 90's list (though it is really an 80's vibe movie).

Okay, American or English language...but I haven't see many new movies in the '90s or '00s, so let me start in the '10s:

    10s: Intolerance
    20s: Sunrise
    30s: City Lights
    40s: Citizen Kane
    50s: Vertigo
    60s: 2001: A Space Odyssey
    70s: Godfather II
80s: Raging Bull (I know 1980 is on the cusp, but I cheated)

Yuck...that list looks like a film school syllabus.:sigh: Maybe my list of "second bests" would be more interesting...

THE JAZZ SINGER a perhaps honorable nod to this 1929 film, I don't know if its politically correct, a silent film then Jolson sings................

Here is my list of Nominees:

10's: Intolerance (thanks DBryant for reminding me)
    20's: Ben Hur
30's: Tie: The Wizard of Oz & Gone With the Wind
    40's: Casablanca
50's: The Ten Commandments, close second: Ben Hur (the 20's original is
better story telling, but...11 Academy Awards, WHEW!!)
    60's: The Sound of Music
70's: Star Wars IV: A New Hope (this is the film that saved 20th Century
Fox, and got people back into the theaters), close second: The
    Godfather (incredible performances).
80's: Ferris Bueller's Day Off (Completely captures the essence of the "ME"
    decade)
    90's: Dances With Wolves
00's: The Lord of the Rings (so far)

Here's what the Internet Movie Database voters came up with (based on films with more than 1000 votes - ties are broken by whichever film had the most votes)

    1930s: M
    1940s: Casablanca
    1950s: Seven Samurai
1960s: Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb
    1970s: The Godfather
    1980s: The Empire Strikes Back
    1990s: The Shawshank Redemption
2000s: The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers

OK, I'll take a whack at it!

    30's Stagecoach

    40's Citizen Kane

50's The Searchers (Rebel Without A Cause, a close 2nd)

    60's Goldfinger

    70's Godfather

    80's Empire Strikes Back

    90's American Beauty

    00's Fellowship Of The Ring

It's hard to leave out some faves like Grapes Of Wrath, Shadow Of A Doubt, Seven Samurai, Quiet Man, Manchurian Candidate, Forest Gump, Lost In Translation among my top films. Yeah, I'm heavily biased toward Ford. He's the best.

BTW, I just got back from seeing the long-version of Fellowship on a big screen. Wow.

It's not really a tie if one has the most votes, is it?

What about "Paris Trout", or "American Werewolf in Paris", or "Paris Holiday" or an underrated "Paris is Burning"?

I need to add "Finding Nemo" to my list as well. I didn't list an 00s so it's my fave, at least until "The Incredibles" comes out next year. :)

    Beuller?....Beuller?....Beuller?....Beuller?...(great choice! )

Never heard of this movie....who was in it and what year did it come out?

Very unusual selection for a 70's movie.

    Thanks Dan!

I know it probably doesn't meet most people's "it's a classic" definition, but when I think of the 80's - this is always the first movie to come to mind.

Yes it is. It is based on an average of ten point ratings for films with at least 1000 votes. If a film had 1000 votes and a 9.0 average. It won out over a film with 2000 votes and a 1.0 average handily. For two films with the same average rating, I chose the one with the larger number of votes.

    My choices (my second bests):

1910s - Intolerance (The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari)
    1920s - Metropolis (Battleship Potemkin)
1930s - Bringing Up Baby (My Man Godfrey)
1940s - Citizen Kane (The Maltese Falcon)
1950s - North by Northwest (Touch of Evil)
    1960s - 8 1/2 (Once Upon a Time in the West)
1970s - Cabaret (The Garden of the Finzi Continis)
1980s - Hannah and Her Sisters (sex, lies, and videotape)
    1990s - Amateur (Pulp Fiction)
2000s - Mulholland Drive (Requiem for a Dream)

While I love the 70s, I'm not sure that the 50s weren't at least as good.

    Shalom, y'all!
