I'm concerned washing it with soap and water could cause it to dry and crack over time. I definitely need to clean it though. I can actually feel bits of dust partlices when I run my fingers over it, which probably isn't great for my records.

Nope, soap and water is best. Rubber likes water. Make sure you rinse super well and get the soap off and any dampness will actually be welcomed by the rubber making it more pliable. But if yours is decaying and crumbling off particles, then you should replace it.

Yeah, just wash it in the sink like a plate. Rinse any soap off, let it dry and you're done.

It is a thick one as well, that came with my Denon dp300f. Maybe I'll try rinsing it with lukewarm water and dry it a bit with a soft towel before air drying

Yeap. If it is grooved (Marantz) I use a soft brush, then rinse thoroughly and air dry. No towels.
