A lot was down to the skill of the director George Stevens. Coincidentally I watched a documentary on him on Sky Arts this evening.

This scene is expertly set up by the earlier scene with Beauchamp, when Little Bill delivers his lesson on gunplay. But where Beauchamp hasn't a clue how to use a gun, let alone the desire to kill Little Bill, Munny has both and Little Bill instantly realizes it.

Interestingly enough, google does not have an answer for "what is the best best western?" or even "what is the best best western hotel". I thought google knew everything.

To add to the thread, "Western Cinevault" (which Id been liking) recently disappeared from my station choices (I think it was a free station on "Vizio TV"). :(

It's such a funny refrain for what is ultimately a very dark movie. This scene, for example, is a masterpiece in dark humor.

Of course it doesn't hurt to have Gene Hackman carrying the load. I'd add that Saul Rubinek is outstanding in his role, which is unique to the genre.

It's hard for me to see Saul Rubinek as anyone other than Donny (from Frasier), especially since I didn't see both True Romance and Unforgiven until after his Frasier run, but he was outstanding in his supporting roles in both of those films. And let's face it, when you can hold your own in a scene with Gene Hackman and Richard Harris, that says a lot.

Eastwood too. I love that even after the bloodbath at Skinny's saloon, Beauchamp is still on the make, hoping to hook on as Munny's biographer!
What a fantastic character, and Rubinek is perfect for that role.

I don't think it's the best western, but I do think I've watched Jeremiah Johnson the highest number of times.
