I was looking through some old photos this morning and I came across some that I took in January of 1961, when Dave Jones and I spent a couple of weeks in New Orleans, recording the "Living Legends" series of Riverside albums. Since it was also Dave who recorded the Bill Evans Village Vanguard sessions and since they sometimes are discussed here, I thought it might be of interest to see Dave set up the same equipment at Societé Des Jeunes Amis hall, in the French Quarter, five months earlier.

Ampex 350-1 full track, Ampex 351-2 two track, Ampex MX-35 mixer.

He left the 350 home when he did Bill Evans though. No real mono of that, just a fold-down..

    Thanks for sharing.

As I clicked on this thread, it just happened that Bill Evans (Time For Love from the Verve LP Alone) was playing in the background. It seemed to go well with the pictures.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but shouldn't that be the Village Vanguard where Bill Evans recorded for Riverside in 1961?

I'm not an expert, but by seeing all of that equipment it becomes evident that a lot of hard work went into those Vanguard recordings. Looks like a lot of planning and setup was required to capture the sound. A real labor of love paid off with some truly beautiful albums.

    Thanks for sharing. Very cool.

Sorry about that mistake, of course it was the Vanguard--I can still see Dave and his Ampex in the shadows, to the right of the bandstand.

J.A.W. is right, it takes a lot more to piss me off--truth never does the job. :) I would have corrected my mistake, but I see no edit option. Would appreciate it if someone could make the change.

OK, I've exchanged the word "Gate" for "Vanguard" in the title and first paragraph.

Great pictures- thanks for sharing. I still love going to the VV, I just wish the Gate was still around instead of the CVS Pharmacy it was turned into.

Just amazing that despite 47 years of technological growth and "progress" that those sessions captured some of the finest sound recordings I have ever heard.

    Thanks for the pics

I just got the complete Bill Evans Village Vanguard sessions box today and these tapes sound so good. The piano tone is actually much better than many (all?) of his studio recordings. I'm very curious to learn the specifics of what gear was used. I know Dave Jones had to use headphones for monitoring but how many mics, what kind of mics, etc...

    Thanks.
