Subject says it all. Looks like there is a Japanese SACD but it's stereo only. I know there was a quad mix that was done in the 70s and released on an SQ LP, but has that seriously never been released on a high-res surround format? Wow.

The Audio Fidelity Surround Collection SACD has one of the quad mixes from Bitches Brew.

yes and the entire album is amazing in Quad, I have no idea what the holdup is in its release but it should have been done yesterday.

the true quad mix will blow your mind. I suggest try just listening to the rear channels only on Pharoahs Dance....

I suspect this release is re-using the original 4.0 SQ LP mix done in the 1970's. This is likely a sort of Quadio SACD.

Was Bitches Brew recorded in quad, or just remixed into four channel?

    If the former, I'm interested.

What is ever recorded in quad or even stereo? It all starts out as 16 tracks or so.

Mixed to stereo in 1969. Remixed to quad in 1971.

Sorry, I should have been more clear. My question should have been: Was the original recording done with quad in mind, or was the normal stereo mix electronically "enhanced" to produce a quad effect (really bad)? Alternatively, did someone go back the original multi-track recording (however many channels) and re-mix it for quad (also bad)?

The only way I'd be interested in a quad record is if the original recording was done with quad in mind. Meaning, the recording engineer (who may or may not have mixed the multi-track tape) would have recorded tracks specifically with the rear channels in mind. This could in the form of ambiance, crowd sounds, or special effects. Any are acceptable to me, but what is not is messing around with a recording originally intended for stereo or mono for that matter. That smacks of meddling, like adding a touch of color to a masterpiece painting. I'll have no truck with that!

See post #24 for clarification. Sorry about that.

Although, I will say it is possible to record directly to stereo (or mono or even quad). Most of the time we see multi-track recordings that are later mixed to stereo, but one can record directly to stereo.
