I put this in the Visual Arts section by accident...whoops.

    I'm getting the 2 Deluxe Marvin Gaye CD's for $ 9.99!!!

Give me some other suggestions by the following artists, please:

    John Coltrane (have Love Supreme)
    Ella Fitzgerald
Billie Holiday (have Ken Burns best of)
Miles Davis (have Blue, Bitches, Smiles, Ahead, Essential, Porgy & Bess).

I'll think of some more in a few. I have till midnight tonight!!

Coltrane - Blue Train, Coltrane, Coltrane w/Ellington, OM, Dakar, Live At Birdland, My Favorite Things, Coltrane & Thelonus Monk, Giant Steps, With Johnny Hartman, Soultrane, Coltrane Jazz... and about 2 dozen other titles I've forgotten.

Ella Fitzgerald - Get the songbooks. Like the Cole Porter Songbook, or the Ella & Louis sets. Gotta have em, Clap Hands Here Comes Charlie.
Billie Holiday, Any of the Columbia collections that take care of the early days, or Solitude, Lady Sings The Blues, Songs For Distingue Lovers, Lady In Satin, Jazz At The Philharmonic and for pete sake, get The Sound Of Jazz, (var artists).

Miles, ANYTHING ON FANTASY! What, you don't have In A Silent Way??

Brubeck - If I were you, get Time Out and Time Further Out.

Coltrane - Blue Train & either Soltrane or My Favorite Things

Miles - In A Silent Way and either Bags Groove or Relaxin'.

Compilations, when you get deeper into things are only going to provide repitition. If you choose to go no deeper, than go for boxes and 2-CD sets.... But the original art form of the complete LP is much better experienced as a whole product. Donno if that makes sense.

    CDs at BMG I suggest

    Gordon Lightfoot-Gord's Gold

    Connie Francis-Very Best Of...
    Lesley Gore-Golden Hits of...
an Andrews Sisters Greatest Hits collection (the ASV CD of "Apple Blossom Time" is also offered by BMG for those who wish to go further)
a Burl Ives greatest hits CD: While "Greatest Hits" is a much better overview of his talent, it omits several key hits which they do include on the Millennium Collection and as a result, I am posting the track listings.

    Greatest Hits:
    01 Big Rock Candy Mountain
    02 Blue Tail Fly
    03 Lavender Blue (Dilly Dilly)
04 One Hour Ahead Of The Posse
05 On Top Of Ol' Smoky
06 True Love Goes On And On
    07 Polly Wolly Doodle
    08 A Little Bitty Tear
    09 Royal Telephone
    10 Home On The Range
    11 Funny Way Of Laughin'
    12 Call Me Mr. In-Between
13 Pearly Shells (Popo O Ewa)
    14 It Never Happens
    15 My Heart Stood Still
16 By The Light Of The Silvery Moon
    17 Beautiful Brown Eyes
18 This Is All I Ask

    Millennium Collection:
    01 A Little Bitty Tear
    02 Funny Way Of Laughin'
    03 Lavender Blue (Dilly Dilly)
    04 Blue Tail Fly
    05 Wild Side Of Life
    06 Call Me Mr. In-Between
07 Pearly Shells (Popo O Ewa)
    08 Mary Ann Regrets
    09 The Same Old Hurt

While Greatest Hits is OOP in stores, BMG is still offering it, while Millennium Collection is available in stores.

I'm set w/ Beach Boys. I burned my own Ultimate comp and has about 30 tracks on it. I'm more of a Stones, Beatles guy.

Hey what about Dusty In Memphis. Single CD vs. Deluxe edition?

  11. BradOlson

The Deluxe Edition of Dusty In Memphis is a single CD as well and it has additional bonus tracks which weren't even included on the regular 1992 pressing. The 1992 CD has 2 bonus tracks (14 tracks) while the Deluxe Edition has 25 tracks total. The 1992 pressing is in a jewel case while the Deluxe Edition is in a digipak.

What's the best Etta James single disc comp?

I'll add Cole Poter thanks. I was thinking about Someday My Prince Will Come.. hmm...

For Etta James, get At Last to start with. I don't have this one yet, but it is something I'd personally buy

HER BEST is a good single-disc comp, or you can spring for the two-disc ESSENTIAL set, assuming they have either. I don't have a strong preference for either, sonically.

Don't overlook the Sarah Vaughan set, which is one of the all-time jazz vocal classics.

Get some Bing Crosby as well. Either Gold Records or the boxed set. If all you want is a basic collection, go for Gold Records, but if you want more, go for the boxed set but since there is more to Bing than just the signature songs, go for the boxed set "His Legendary Years."
