I remember blind buying this on release week after reading a rave review. It didn't really sound like anything else back then, and 20 years on, nobody sounds quite like them. All of their subsequent releases have been special, but it's the debut I return to most frequently. Back in the day it was comedown music for Sunday afternoons after the previous night's partying, where I'd have it on repeat as I drifted in and out of consciousness. A modern masterpiece then.

I actually listened to this last weekend because of its 20th anniversary... still sounds fresh.

Thought I'd bump this, seeing as how it's:

One of the greatest albums of all time
One of the greatest debut albums of all time
One of the greatest British albums of all time.

I just happened to choose this the other day when the Top 20 Records things started going around on Facebook. I didn't realize it was turning 20 until I started writing a few words about it. This is what I posted. I'm glad I posted this as I now see I posted the same thing twice.

Awesome album. Love the analogue wavering feel. Don’t think BOC gets much love on this forum but I am sure you’ve visited the Twoism board right?

Great album, I prefer it actually to Geogaddi and Twoism.

Weird. Pulled this out last night and listened to sides A & B. It sounded absolutely amazing.

Fell asleep during both sides - but in the nicest possible way. It’s an absolutely sublime record..

Listening right now. Love the retro feel, retro even for the late 90s. And not over-produced like so much today.

That parallels my experience. I remember playing it in the classroom (I teach high school) and asking the kids what they thought about it. They were "meh" but that is teenagers for ya.

I was playing some BoC last week (and right now) to test my new speakers. The bass? Oh yes, when the speakers are right, it is there. Very.

Twenty years. It still is a very fresh sound.

I just realized that I first heard "Roygbiv" on Groove Salad/SomaFM before investigating further.

Does anyone listen to SomaFM any more? I keep supporting it but rarely listen in.

I listen to Groove Salad all day through the week and at the gym. They've now added a "classic" Groove Salad station along with the modern one.

Loved this record when it came out. Among my group of friends at the time it was a big deal. We all would pretend that we recognized samples from old NFB films as someone had said that that was their source for some of their samples. Very evocative music.

They really need to reissue all the Boards Of Canada catalog on vinyl. I picked up The Campfire Headphase 2014 repress on 2xLP which is my favorite album of theirs, though I'm not much blown away by the sound of it.

My 45rpm copy of the In A Beautiful Place In The Country EP (2013 repress) sounds incredible, however.

I’m new to BOC, and want to pick up some vinyl from them. I see they’ve been reissued - any particular pressing(s) to avoid (or any that are particularly awesome)? I recently found an original pressing of Hi Scores (my introduction) in MN condition for $5, and I’m really loving it...

    A sonically great album.

And more importantly... a musically great album.

I recommend Casino versus Japan - Go Hawaii for some good stuff with a similar vibe.
