I used to own one of his lower-tier Black Magic tube amps. One day I decided I wanted a second one to run in a mono pair but they were impossible to find. My dealer put me in touch with Bob and he offered to build a second one for me!

Cannot recommend his gear enough. And a genuinely nice guy as well.

Bob Carver had practically nothing to do with the Lightstar. Jim Croft and his engineering team at Carver Research designed and built it. Having listened to one numerous times I can say it was a far better amp than any of Bob's solid state designs.

Dual powers cords for the dual mono topology. One cord for each channel. Other amps such as the CTC BBQ did the same.

Oh yes I remember all that stuff. Don't forget Sonic Holography!

I actually had one of the magnetic field cube amps back in the day.

I won't! :) (See thread on last page.)

I was always intrigued by those little cube amps but anecdotal tales of their failing kept me from buying one.

I do, however, use five (5) Carver A-400x stereo power amps in my main HT.

I just saw a full page ad for this integrated amp in a not-so-good image in the latest issue of TAS ...

Carvin TS100 all-tube 50w x2 amplifier. Was $600. I can do a $2000 mod on them that will make you think they sound like a McIntosh.

(the mod is actually done to your brain by charging the $2000 extra).

I actually think it's nice looking. Out of my price-range though. It'll be interesting seeing that EJ from W4S is involved.
