If you don't like the music enough as stated, I would definitely pass and move on. Life is too short to pay exorbitant prices for music you don't like. Better to pay exorbitant prices for music you do like.
Gaye, 7000+ Dylan 9000 The others, nothing like these totals and Abraxas was a woeful quantity, not that that title interested me in the slightest. Like I said, I also don't care who buys how many and flip's them and frankly nor do MoFi! SOLD OUT, was what confronted buyers to the Gaye title a little earlier this year, so turning customers away when they had stock, that's forcing them to buy elsewhere through third party. C'mon, you have to agree with that Sam MoFi don't give a rat's backside for the customer as can be seen by the lax attitude toward correcting the too frequent and repeated issues with these sets. But overseas, well forget it even buying direct [if they admit to having stock to sell that is!].So expecting a degree of honesty about shipping sequentially just ain't gonna happen so based on past practice it is safe(r) to say, these Dylan pressing are not that close to selling out.
I have to counter with the fact that I have had nothing but great service from both MoFi and Music Direct, which as I understand it are two branches of the same company. I can’t speak about their service overseas like you can but every exchange and interaction I’ve had with them here has been very good. Sure, having to call in and report a problem is a bit of a pain but in every instance they had a replacement shipped out to me, if not that same day, the day after. I feel like as long as there are human beings involved with the manufacturing and packaging process there are going to be occasional problems. The friction marks on the inner jackets still annoys me. I can’t believe that they can’t come up with some kind of fix for it. Annoying? Yes. Enough to make me not want to purchase another One Step title? No. The worst one I have in that regard is the Fagen and the best one I have is the Dylan, which was completely free of them. I’ve got 3 other titles as well with varying degrees of rub marks on them. None are enough for me to call and complain about. I’ve called them twice with problems in the pressing itself. One was disc 2 on the Evans One Step and the other was Rickie Lee Jones’ Pirates. In both cases they shipped me replacement discs straight away and that resolved the problem. I realize you are not inclined to buy a copy of the Dylan but man, I’m telling you, if you are a serious fan of the album, you’re doing yourself a disservice by not picking it up. As I previously posted, I’ve got what I believe is the same 33 1/3 pressing you have and this is superior. I actually ended up with 3 copies of the One Step. I preordered 2 from MD and had forgotten that I also preordered 1 directly from MoFi. So....if you do change your mind about it after they have disappeared let me know. I will most likely keep one of them as a backup but will be letting the other one go and am not out to gouge anyone. -Jeff
Last point first, really kind offer, thanks. It's unlikely I'm going to change my mind regard obtaining any MoFi product though. Yes, a huge disappointment from a 2 plus decade customer of theirs, sorry former customer of theirs! The issue I have had with MoFi is a simple one, well at least a simple one to have resolved [faulty disc in a 1s set]. MoFi have shown, clearly demonstrated they have no regard for overseas customers. At this price point I just don't accept they can simply walk away from what is their manufacturing fault and hide behind third party selling. On the issue of scuffed sleeves. Its an issue that's long been standing and despite some recent promise, nothing has materialised to show the issue has been addressed. Not the best advertisement for them but of their own making. No big deal to me, plenty of other record outlets, plenty of records in a half century of buying.
Got mine today. Just listened. Everything was perfection: the box, the sleeves, the inserts, the dead flat and quiet lps. The sound was pristine...it’s just wonderful. Like a new listening experience. The clarity of the music was so outstanding that I finally figured out what Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts is about! Ok, it’s not that clear...but you get my drift. I’ll be selling my regular Mofi of this soon. Heck, I might be selling the whole collection soon...With this and More Blood, More Tracks, I have all I need!
Before you rant on further. MFSL are imported by F Minor into the UK. They are responsible for eating any faulty product. Certainly Diverse Vinyl who stock MFSL will exchange or refund on faulty pressings. Good luck with the spotty printing on inners. That looks par for the course and frankly would have to be really bad for me to bother. Logistics and cost logically make it difficult to get replacement parts for imports. The answer is buy from Music Direct as I did last time for BOTW only to discover it was more expensive than buying from UK. Music Direct and AP should provide a more economically priced export service. I'm still waiting for Amazon US to get copies of BOTT but for some time they have been showing an actual delivery estimate of 26th sept to 17th october. I'm confident that this title is far from sold out and 3rd party suppliers will eventually have some copies at least.
I also really like the drive of “...Jack” on this new one...and I’ve always enjoyed reading interpretations of it...and so many other Bob tunes. I did sell my org Mofi 33 right after hearing this new one...we both got a good deal, i think. I’m keeping one of my bott reissues for my album art rotation. Also have More Blood, which is a keeper. Still contemplating procuring another one of these one-steps before they sell out.
I finally bit on this. After refusing to pay $100+ on a new record of the UHQR/UltraDisc variety, I think the general consensus here and positive (yet limited) reviews comparing with originals and reissues had me leaning closer to picking this up. Combine that with my positive experience with records cut at 45rpm vs 33, as well as my enjoyment of the Blue Note SRX vinyl formula, and I just had to do it. The main reason has to be that the album is one of my favorites; but, I never felt it sounded 'definitive' before in either its original 2A/2AA pressing, its Columbia Mastersound Half-Speed pressing, nor in its MOFI 33rpm pressing, and I own all three. They all leave me wanting a little more intimacy, a little more size, a little more energy, or a little more slam, depending on the song and my own mood. I hope this version gives me all of those. I received the package this week, and Record #2 has to be replaced for what looks like white paper baked into the grooves on one side; whatever it is wouldn't dislodge with dry brush or wet cleaning. So, MOFI is sending me a new Disc 2, and when I get them cleaned and can compare, I will go through all of the above pressings and post my thoughts. I may have a MOFI 33rpm for sale in the Classifieds after that...
Did the big one step thread (covering the series as a whole) get removed? Had it bookmarked and that link no longer works. Thanks
Amazon UK now have the set listed at £141.95 and I’ve just received an update that delivery is now expected for the 27th ...
Not really a rant, just the facts of the matter and presented to maybe help others with orders direct from MoFi. Clearly you missed some of the "rants", as I imported from Amazon [US], they being the cheapest source available to me in the UK [after MoFi stated they were SOLD OUT, though we know they were not!]. Amazon acted in a professional way, exemplary conduct. Replacing the faulty set without fuss or extra cost. Maybe the points missed include the fact that having to return a full set for what was one faulty disc was over kill. Having to return a box set that was fine [for the most part]and have it replaced with a set with crappy inners and part of the gold foil spine detail missing is not great, or maybe you think differently? Getting two slightly warped records in return for an almost unplayable one is also good? Then there is the point, what if the outlet in question does not have a replacement set to send? Yes, unlikely with such a huge numbered "limited" run as this but at some point it will happen. These are the chances you take going third party, so all I'm cautioning is that it is possibly better paying the double shipping cost that MoFi and their other outlet charge in the first instance and fingers crossed the customer service is good, [note that not all overseas customers are reporting anything like good customer returns service with MoFi!].
A new demo disc. Can’t get enough of it right now. And you’re so right about Jack...it goes. And Big Girl is crazy good, sonically.
Please do! I look forward to hearing your impressions, especially compared to the 33 1/3 MoFi pressing.
Amazon.ca finally made good on my order placed many months ago. Won’t be able to listen to it for a few years still, but happy they made it happen.
I don’t agree entirely. I have the Sundazed albums and the mono box set. To me the MoFi’s are the way to go. Not a huge difference but there’s more depth to the sound.
Arrived. Amazon put it in a soft plastic bag with no other protection! Miraculously no dings or dents. Inner sleeves have no issues and vinyl plays perfectly. This is the best sounding one step I have bought to date. Notably they used the whole 4 sides for this cut with little dead wax which I'm sure helps (though it's a longish album on two sides). Convinced the new vinyl formula is better. This plays with nr zero surface noise and reveals detail not heard before. Pity they didn't use the Ultra Vinyl for BOTW.
Got mine today. It's #2744 and I only ordered it 4 days ago directly from MoFi. So, not sure how many copies are actually left or how the numbering is working.. On first listening I would say it is the best sounding BOTT that I have (I have the MoFi 33 1/3 vinyl and the MoFi sacd). The vinyl is dead quiet and looks immaculate. I find the sound differences subtle but noticeable to me. I generally had a issues with the vocal tracks on other releases but not with this one. All the tracks have better sounding vocals than my other copies. You're A Big Girl Now is the standout so far.
With a 9000 run there will be plenty of copies around if not with mo-fi but in stock with distributors and retailers round the world. My guess this is not the most popular title they reissued though above Jazz releases and 'What's Going On'. My guess is that below 5000 copies a rapid sell out with instant sell out if 1500 copies only. Anything around 10,000 will likely take months to move (or even a couple of years). The market for people prepared to pay £150 for a remastered album is quite limited. Less than for beat up overpriced original classic rock pressings.
Arrived a few days ago, cleaned and playing this evening. Revelatory. Easily the best copy I own. No surprises there. Does anyone know if MoFi corrected the speed on the various tracks? Is it still all around 2% fast?
Yes, I have the Columbia half speed. Yes, it's nice that it's the correct speed. But, that half speed sounds "off", or not right somehow. I vaguely remember there were issues with the half speed process. Up to now, it's been the MoFi 33 rpm. From here on, it's this one.
