To be accurate: it's a Hammond organ.

(and yes, while the naked intimacy of the non-reverb tracks is powerful, it sure does lack the mystery of a lo-fi boot where the romance is in its clandestine dub. my fave version of Emmett Till is a rough sounding boot where Bob's vocal distorts along with a furiously strummed guitar. Something about not being able to hear it all so easily adds to the nuance.)

I think it was probably D capoed at the second fret. The first take of If You See Her Say Hello is in open D, and the second is in open E. The easiest and fastest solution (with less risk of string breakage and stress on the neck) would be to capo at the second fret.

On the other hand, everything after that first take of If You See Her Say Hello is in open E, so maybe he just retuned the guitar. There are no photos of the sessions available to the public, so who knows.

    That's because it is 'futile'.

Is the horn futile because it is a washed-out horn (that blows in my face with scorn)? And is the one-eyed undertaker a friend of the guilty undertaker?

Yes. The 'piano' versions of the 3 songs above are all in G (capo 5th fret), as are some of the band takes of Lonesome.

A couple of musings on the futile horn:-

The horn is probably a Shofar, usually fashioned from a hollowed-out ram's horn. "Ram's Horn", of course, was the name of Bob's publishing company at the time. The horn is used in Jewish ceremonies and is particularly associated with Rosh Hashanah, the day on which the New York recording sessions started. Apparently it is used to announce a death or a funeral, and blown as a sign of mourning. It makes an appearance in Exodus 19, being blown from atop Mount Sinai. In times of battle it is blown from a hilltop to gather the troops.

I don't think Bob means the horn itself is futile, but that the blowing of it by the one-eyed undertaker is futile. I'm not sure why, though. Perhaps greater minds can take over from here....

So that reveals yet another 'version' of these tracks. I wonder if there is a speed corrected version.

Remind me, which take of Tangled is on the Test Pressing and which ended up on BS123?

Making mistakes and not owning up to them is one thing but throwing a hissy fit and closing off a lucrative legally prudent endeavour is another...
