I think it's about time for a Bob Dylan Greatest Hits Vol. 4. It's been 21 years since Vol. 3, and Bob has had a wealth of great tracks since then. Anyone want to attempt a compilation? The only rules are:
    1) must be kept to a single CD length (79 minutes)
    2) must contain tracks recorded since Gt. hits 3. So, no bootleg series tracks, newly found outtakes, songs from old albums etc..
B-sides, soundtracks, duets etc..are ok--as long as they've been recorded since Hits 3.

I'd love to see a fourth volume, but there has been such a glut of Dylan comps in recent years—heck, they've recently reissued The Essential Bob Dylan with a handful of DIFFERENT songs on it, including new ones like Duquesne Whistle—that it'll never happen.

Don't really see the point. Since vol 3 we've had a number of comp albums and a wealth of Bootleg Box sets.
I think it's all moved on

    Peace and love✌

I find it amazingly hard to get things down to one cd, but I think it's a great idea to give curious fans his later work in an easily digestible package. More artists of that vintage should cull the best of their sometimes spotty late albums to put the best work out there - it's often better than they get credit for. In Dylan's case, it's an embarrassment of riches.

The format of Vol 3 was one song per album (pretty much) and using that idea here's one possible tracklist:

    Jim Jones
    Delia
    Love Sick
    Things Have Changed
    Mississippi
    'Cross the Green Mountain
Highwater (live 2003 Tell Tale Signs)
    Nettie Moore
    Beyond Here Lies Nothin'
    Little Drummer Boy
    Duquesne Whistle
    Long and Wasted Years*
    Lucky Old Sun

Damn, if that wouldn't rival most artists career-long Greatest Hits sets....

*slight cheat from the one per album idea, but it's too good a song to leave off, plus it's short.

Should be a 2-disc collection but I conformed to the OP's request:

Greatest Hits, Volume 4 in chronological order here (but I would mix it up)
    1. Step It Up and Go (Good As I Been To You, 1992) Promo Single
    2. Blood In My Eyes (World Gone Wrong, 1993) Promo Single
    3. Love Sick (Time Out Of Mind, 1997) Single
    4. Not Dark Yet (Time Out Of Mind, 1997) Single
    5. Make You Feel My Love (Time Out Of Mind, 1997) Single
    6. Things Have Changed (single, 2000) Single
    7. Mississippi (Love And Theft, 2001) Promo sampler
    8. High Water (Love And Theft, 2001) Live Single in 2008 but I would use studio version
    9. Tell Ol' Bill (North Country soundtrack, 2005) It's just good
    10. Thunder On The Mountain (Modern Times, 2006) Promo Single
    11. Someday Baby (Modern Times, 2006) Single
    12. Beyond Here Lies Nothin’ (Together Through Life, 2009) Promo Single
    13. Feel A Change Comin' On (Together Through Life, 2009) Promo Single
    14. Chicago After Dark (Together Through Life, 2009) Outtake to entice modBob fans who have everything
    15. Must Be Santa (Christmas In The Heart, 2009) Single
    16. Duquesne Whistle (Tempest, 2012) Single
    17. The Night We Called It A Day (Shadows In The Night, 2015) Single

I tried to replicate the general feel of Greatest Hits. vol. 3 by only having one track per album and limited myself to 14 songs. I also tried to focus on the songs that were either released as "singles" or as music videos or at least compiled on 2007's Dylan 3 CD set instead of just picking my favorites.

    1. Things Have Changed
    2. Make You Feel My Love
    3. The Night We Called It A Day
    4. You're Gonna Quit Me
    5. Summer Days
    6. Duquesne Whistle
    7. Must Be Santa
    8. When The Deal Goes Down
    9. I Could Have Told You
    10. Blood In My Eyes
    11. 'Cross The Green Mountain
    12. Melancholy Mood
    13. Can't Escape From You
    14. Beyond Here Lies Nothin'

Heylin contends that "Chicago After Dark" doesn't exist, and Dylan was just spinning a tale in the interview he mentioned it. However, I don't believe he ever clarified if he has actual evidence to back up that claim.

I'm familiar with that Heylin quote but if I recall the together through life press interview correctly, they talked about the meaning of Chicago after dark. I think it was the interviewer that brings it up? It doesn't make sense to me.

He goes into a bit more detail in the U.K. Edition of "Still on the Road" but summarizes here (without apparent evidence):

The gems that Bob Dylan discarded

    25 Chicago After Dark

Described at length in a 2009 interview to promote the album Together Through Life, according to Dylan, it’s about “how sometimes we know people and we are no longer what we used to be to them”. In fact, this song never existed. He made it all up. How fitting.

Maybe we should shoot Heylin an email about this and specifically ask about how he knows it doesn't exist? One other prevailing theory about this track was that it was an alternate title for Feel A Change Comin on. I'm not sure I ever bought that theory though. Chicago After Dark does sound like a cool title though.

Taking that approach is something I always find difficult, even though I think GH3 works quite well. I just never have the discipline. Your GH4 looks excellent, even if sadly incomplete for a dork like myself. I'll have to give it a spin!

Great list! It's hard to leave off "Love Sick" though...and I'm not sure if "Must Be Santa" would be included since it's seasonal...but otherwise a very nice list.
