I came across this piece that discussed Bob's performance on the 2011 Grammys. (Unlike the writer, I thought it was just fine. Nothing spectacular but not a trainwreck.) Mumford & Sons, The Avett Brothers and Bob Dylan Live at 2011 Grammy's (February 13, 2011) from Ana on Vimeo My question for those who watch it is: Who is the guy described by the writer as "the ringer" in Bob's musician grouping? I recognize Donnie Herron, Stu Kimball and the ubiquitous Tony Garnier, but who's the short dude with the white beard playing guitar amongst them? I don't recognize him. I went to Bob Links to check the setlist but it's not there. Olof's Files don't mention him either. (For those who don't want to sit through five minutes and twenty seconds of uber-earnest contemporary folk histrionics to get to Bob, he descends from the heavens at the 5:20 mark. )
Do we know how Harvey Mandel got involved in such a low-key, anonymous, one-off performance. He was basically just a shadowy figure inaudibly lurking behind Bob. It's not like they "needed" him on the gig, nor was he involved in any touring or recording projects I'm aware of.
