Yeah, I bought the booklet on EB at the time. Not a lot of substance--a bit like the album.

I'm hoping that it's all Infidels material. I want all of the Mick Taylor stuff that the Dylan camp is willing to shell out.

Dylan also recorded Infidels demos with the late Bruce Gary.

My take: to tell the Infidels story, you have to start with SoL sessions. And then to tell the Empire Burlesque story, and the next two, you need to combine it all into a melange.

So if they’re sticking to Infidels in a proscriptive way, I think they’re making a mistake.

I will add: If they have a robust plan for the post-Infidels box, then I’m all for it. The more Dylan boxes, and the more granular, the better.

I want at least 6 CDs of unreleased material for every album he’s ever made. Why can’t I have that? Infidels is a great album to do that with.

I like “All Infidels, Nothing But Infidels” for the title. I’d buy it!

In one of the interviews with “the source,” he spoke about moving away from the copyright style dumps to a more curated set. My gut is telling me this will be an Infidels themed volume of The Bootleg Series but it will contain other 1980’s material that supports it.
I would expect in addition to alternate takes from Infidels we will see select live cuts from 1984 such as “License To Kill” as that was cut in a single take. “I and I” would be another live cut as there are few studio alternate takes to choose from.
I think we will get a lot of 1986 live tracks. The Source spoke highly of “In The Garden” and that cut from Sydney along with “Ill Remember You” are really good. I think a complete 1986 show will be included.
I agree with other’s comments about Empire Burlesque needing to be included in the story of Infidels. “Band Of The Hand” will also be included as it follows through so much of the themes begun with Infidels about the abuse of power, greed, corruption but also fighting back against those forces.
What Dylan was commenting about in 1984 is every bit as relevant today and I think this volume has the potential to be one of the best volumes in the series. It might also confirm what Steve Martin said at the Oscars that Dylan is ahead of the rest of us.
Now, the long wait until the announcement and the tracklist reveal.

  11. In Jeff Rosen I trust. For me he is singularly responsible for the flawless nature of the Dylan archival program and I doubt he will start making bad decisions now.

Not sure how far we have got, but there seems to be an acceptance that this set may stretch a little before and after Infidels, with Infidel-related material, which is what I was hoping for. I am not sure anyone ever expected this to include Oh Mercy for instance. I am just hoping we don’t get for example seven takes of License to Kill. Given warnings about the life expectancy of the series, there’s too much good stuff we could miss out on. And no matter how often we say, “give us it all”, we know that is not commercially viable outside of copyright dumps.

I think if it does stretch beyond ‘Infidels’ then that’s the most likely scenario.

Someone on the fan-boy Expecting Rain forum posted a tracklist of what they hoped for across six discs there were only 14 Infidels tracks in total and the rest was stuff ranging from 1980 rehearsals to live performances in the 2000s.

    Just no.

    Not happening.

I think the issue is that a lot of people confuse these type of releases with some kind of Spotify playlist.

  15. If I was feeling very generous I would say Infidels is a good album, but very far from a great album. I'm not but nevermind......

There is no requirement to copyright protect this material for another 12 years. The album is not remotely significant or game changing in either Dylan's catalogue or the history of post-war music. It's just another album that few people care about.

So far the big boxes have uniquely focused on the big three major albums of the 60s and Blood On The Tracks. Every one of them is regarded as a classic in their own right. To produce a big box exclusive to Infidels is so far unprecedented in the series. They haven't even dedicated a big box to major early albums like The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan yet, which in my opinion would be completely justifiable.

People are citing Self Portrait as an example of a period where there was much cynicism and skepticism about the existence of great material left behind but Another Self Portrait was just 2 discs of material and focuses as much on New Morning as that notorious album. Since then we've had 3 CDs focusing on two country inspired albums and a famous Cash session and one 3 CD set copyright dump for the ASP period.

So where is the logic in releasing 6CDs around one insignificant album? Personally, I believe that if that is indeed the idea, it will be a mistake and serve to bring about the early demise of the Bootleg Series.

You are forgetting the superlative collection Trouble No More. Which is where I came in on this thread.

Infidels is one of my favourite Dylan albums. But I recognise in terms of artistic achievement it’s second tier.

I think there is an interesting story to be told inside Infidels and a potentially fascinating one in and around it.

Infidels has an interesting history in the sense that Dylan went back to the studio and that he dropped some of the best material. I expect quite a lot of alternate versions. I hope that they start with the first sessions after Shot of Love.

  18. I'm not forgetting TNM. That does not simply focus on one album, but three so-called Christian albums.

  19. Dylan going back and changing things and indeed dropping some of the best material was not unprecedented at that time. Its still largely unremarkable for most listeners beyond the absolute die-hards who have to buy everything ant therefore not as commercially viable as a wider set covering the 80s would be or a curated 2 disc set of Infidels possibly.

So far they always released both if a large box was released. It would surprise me if it was 6 disc only this time. So no problem there.

I think people are also forgetting that there was - I think - more material recorded for/around ‘Infidels’ than any other album that Bob Dylan has ever made.

  22. Interesting. If you pardon my parlance here but Bob was arguably also "transitioning" between two worlds of music: secular and non-secular although he never purely ran down the road of what might be termed "devotional" songs, preferring instead to write more confrontational lyrics berating the "million faces at my feet" for not getting onboard the slow train with him.

Future Dylan songs would all make more oblique references to God and corruption of man and humanity. Infidels could possibly be seen as the start of a return journey back to where he is now so - I'm stretching it here - maybe a milestone in his career, albeit a massively flawed one?

I think this is likely an angle that this set will take in terms of framing it rather than “here’s the Infidels sessions”.

Again I might be wrong. We will see.

I would like 6-8 discs of every Dylan album- every false start, burp & fart from studio sessions and padded with commensurate & complete live shows. I could always then construct my own personal retrospectives. The Cutting Edge was the most awesome box set ever. People should wish for more not less.

I really doubt the physical bootleg series is ever going away, at least until the last of us baby boomers are finally annihilated. Despite the possibility of an end mentioned in Rolling Stone a couple or more years ago, Dylan Inc. continues to sell physical product and make money. They hear the clamor of angry fans who miss out on the limited copyright dumps, as evidenced from the 1970 reissue a year ago.

The mantra should be we want it all and we want it now. This a Nobel laureate here, the Great Bard. Every note, utterance, and scribble relating to his art should be officially available to those who want to fully investigate his ouvre.
