Shot of Love seems under-represented somewhat in the out-takes count: Heart of Mine, Property, Trouble, Angelina, Lenny Bruce all missing in action. Presumably, not much there to add.
It is definitely conspicuous how much commonly-held material is not included. Seems like this time they're trying to tell a particular story, rather than acting as a historical archive. [At least for this volume. I think they've shown that the Bootleg Series is a malleable institution, and who knows what the future holds.] (and I am not necessarily criticizing this approach; I love it all. It's just worth noting.)

The spanish news from last week was legit. -Quite a shame they didn't use the original single take for Trouble In Mind (even if available elsewhere on CD on a german compilation) -No Don't Ever Take Yourself Away either (from the Hawai Five-O soundtrack) -> As for Trouble In Mind, I'm glad that I don't have to throw away CDs I purchased for one track, and I get that the Bootleg Series are not a Rare Tracks compilation (even if there were soundtrack songs in Tell Tale Signs) but for most it is a missed opportunity to get those rare tracks. -Avignon is here (for one track, but still) -Disappointed of not having the Carribean Wind take I always loved (I was so eager to have a good quality version of it) -Great great GREAT work nonetheless
I kinda like the cover, it's font crazy, it's got a K-Tel look about it, it matches Bob's jacket, hey it's the late 70s early 80s, what's taste and design got to do with anything?!
I know there will be much quibbling about what takes got included/excluded, but I am absolutely delighed to see all this material unleashed. It's the best time ever to be a Dylan fan.
I went to two of the Earls Court shows. It was the first time I saw Dylan perform. I was a big fan, but even so it was, for me, a sublime experience. A couple of things I remember. One is that Dylan seemed shaken by the unpopularity of his Gospel tours. Now he was back to playing his old songs alongside the newer material. At the end, he said: "I hope that we played something that you came to hear. If not, we're gonna be here tomorrow night, and the next night and the night after that. You're bound to hear something that you know one of the nights." Well, I went on Saturday 27 June, and afterwards called my sister and said, "you have to come to one of these concerts, Dylan is staggeringly good". So we went on one of the other nights, unfortunately I am not sure which. But I remember thinking it was good but not the equal of the previous one; the setlist was different of course. It would be interesting to listen to all the tapes and see if I still feel there is a lot of variation in the performances. Tim
Maybe this is being seen as the DVD element: Concert Film About Bob Dylan’s “Gospel Tour” to Premiere at the New York Film Festival
Maybe I'm blind, or is there actually no version of Heart of Mine included here? Also, here is hoping that the rumored DVD be a Heavy Metal Parking Lot type thing. Born-Again-Jebus-Freaks battling it out with Fans of earlier eras...
Great news to wake up to! That official youtube clip sounds excellent. I wish we could get an extended version which has all of the shows in their complete form that this set draws from, but that's something to look forward to in 2029-2031!
Expensive but fair. Waiting for Euros price, but I expect it to be around 175€. 175€ for a 9 CD deluxe boxset seems about right. Glad to know that Sony finally gave up the outrageous pricing strategy of the Big Blue Box.
Wait.....so there's no Toronto concert film after all, just audio?!!! So we still need to watch the grainy, fuzzy version on YouTube!
That's by far the worst cover I've ever seen. It beats even the cheesiest low budget Italian bootleg LP's from the 1980's. Utterly horrendous and most definitely the product of a jokerman.
That seems like an awful lot for a relatively obscure and unloved period of Bob's career. My guess is that they either won't make many of them, or we'll see a stack remaindered off in 9 months.
I agree. For less than that we got a 36 CD box of Live 1966 - prime, indisputably top drawer Dylan too!
Yes but we had 18 CD of repetitive studio sessions for 600$ so I guess it's not that bad. 8 CD of carefully selected content + 1 DVD of a specially designed documentary + booklet & photos this price is not surprising.
Yes, it's a composite drawn from April 18th, 19th, & 20th (17th must not have been recorded). You'll be glad to know "Solid Rock" is indeed from the 20th. I believe it includes every song played on those dates, except (weirdly) "Saved." Also, "I Will Love Him" from Toronto is on disc 3 instead one of the Toronto discs!
I think that these are both misconceptions, but there was inevitably a come-down off the high of the last three releases. The complete Basement Tapes was a Dylan Holy Grail; moreover, fans didn't even dare dream that they would one day have a complete set of 1966 concerts or that a single box might cover all the 65-66 studio material. Speaking as an avowed Dylan novice it's difficult to imagine what boxed set with massive commercial appeal might still be left to release, other than maybe the Blood On The Tracks sessions. That said, if you're a Dylan fan (even a casual one) then this new set is massively desirable. There aren't going to be any real surprises for Columbia here: they will expect respectable sales and get them. Any hesitation in the thread will be of the "yes I'm excited, yes I'm buying it, let's just take a moment to scrutinise these contents shall we?" sort.
