"Forever Young" (the first version)
I voted for Wedding Song when the poll came out, but I hadn't listened to the album in years, and I remembered that standing out to me when I first encountered it.
But Dirge should have been it. I'd forgotten Dirge, definitely one of the finer efforts in his entire catalog.
Going. Going. Gone. One of his best songs ever. This album has rather strange sounding production overall, something to do with Robbie's guitar effects and what sounds like a few half-finished songs and unfinished takes. Overall not a bad album, but one of my least favorite Bob albums. Still, 1973 gave us Knockin' on Heaven's Door and Forever Young so still better than most artists in one year, or lifetime for that matter.
I really liked this one when I first heard it, really wore it out for about 6 months, and then didn't listen to it much for 15 years.
I find in revisiting it, it's not what it seemed to me at first, its a lot more complex, and I really like the 'it is what it is' approach to production.
I voted Wedding Song. As with everything Dylan, the themes are so deep and have meant different things and have come to mean different things as I grow older.
Going going gone is easily my favorite then tough mama use to like the wedding song hate on a night like this . The big comeback album would have to wait till blood on the tracks
for me, this is one of dylan's weaker albums, but forever young is delightful
Agreed. Nice cover here
Going Going Gone for me. Love the bridge about following one’s heart, counterpointed with the advice never to part with your one true love. In Dylan’s case he had just done both, though opposites.
This entire album has grown on me more than anything else he did in the '70s.
Dirge, with Going, Going, Gone a close second.
I went for the fast Forever Young because it's so terrible it's an amusing listen at least. Perfectly captures the way religious songs must be played. With collective tongues firmly wedged in collective cheeks.
Forever Young (slow version)
The gorgeous “Hazel” is currently the least popular track!
Forever Young #1.....currently spinning.
Going, Going, Gone.....love the electric guitar intro but the rest as well.
"Dirge" - which is also his best ever singing performance.
Possibly "Dirge". It smells of Blood on the Tracks.
Planet Waves is a lovely album, by the way.
DIRGE! The venom!
First time listening to this albums was just a couple of months ago, it flows nicely but there's not much truly outstanding material on it. But then Dirge hit, wow. I can't think of a song where the singing sounds so brutally honest. Then guitar is great and Bobs rudimentary piano compliments it perfectly. Outstanding track, one of his very best.
Wedding Song. No contest. IMO by far the best song on the album. The whole album is great, but Wedding Song is in another leauge!
For anyone interested, Planet Waves is this week's Weakest Link game..................................
Poll--The Weakest Link: Bob Dylan PLANET WAVES, Round 1
Forever Young #1
The only other songs I like here are "Going Going Gone" and "Tough Mama". One of his weaker albums, I'm glad they didn't include any of the songs on Before The Flood.
I gotta go with Something There Is About You. Forever Young is boooorrrriiinnggg.
Going, Going, Gone
he sounds even more gone on the roomy quad LP mix btw <3
