I love the title track--great horns, killer rhythm section, and Mark Knopfler's brilliant lead work. Also, you can't go wrong with lines like,"Well, my baby went to Illinois/With a bad-talkin' boy she could destroy." :tiphat:

During the last dates of the Spring US tour of 2004, he pulled this rare song out of his hat (along with Ring Them Bells, Not Dark Yet), causing major surprise in the audience. These were the last shows with guitarist Freddy Koella and along with that line-up and that vocal delivery, they resulted in such an amazing renditions, major achievements still unparalleled in his vast live catalogue in my view.

Great album, but not one I pull out to play frequently. If I'm going for this era it usually Saved or Street Legal

I voted Man Gave Names to All the Animals. When I play this album, this song sticks with me a couple of days. Yup, simple lyric and all, then the "end" of the song. It hooks me in, what can I say?

Is this not like today's news? The question remains.....

"When You Gonna Wake Up ?"

God don't make promises that He don't keep
You got some big dreams baby, but in order to dream you gotta still be asleep.

When you gonna wake up, when you gonna wake up
When you gonna wake up strengthen the things that remain ?

Counterfeited philosophies have polluted all of your thoughts
Karl Marx has got ya by the throat, Henry Kissinger's got you tied up in knots.

You got innocent men in jail, your insane asylums are filled
You got unrighteous doctors dealing drugs that'll never cure your ills.

When you gonna wake up, when you gonna wake up
When you gonna wake up strengthen the things that remain ?

You got men who can't hold their peace and woman who can't control their tongues
The rich seduce the poor and the old are seduced by the young.

When you gonna wake up, when you gonna wake up
When you gonna wake up strengthen the things that remain ?

Adulterers in churches and pornography in the schools
You got gangsters in power and lawbreakers making rules.

When you gonna wake up, when you gonna wake up
When you gonna wake up strengthen the things that remain ?

Spiritual advisors and gurus to guide your every move
Instant inner peace and every step you take has got to be approved.

When you gonna wake up, when you gonna wake up
When you gonna wake up strengthen the things that remain ?

Do you ever wonder just what God requires ?
You think He's just an errand boy to satisfy your wandering desires.

When you gonna wake up, when you gonna wake up
When you gonna wake up and strengthen the things that remain ?

You can't take it with you and you know that it's too worthless to be sold
They tell you, 'Time is money' as if your life was worth its weight in gold.

When you gonna wake up, when you gonna wake up
When you gonna wake up and strengthen the things that remain ?

There's a man up on a cross and He's been crucified for you
Believe in His power that's about all you got to do.

When you gonna wake up, when you gonna wake up
When you gonna wake up and strengthen the things that remain ?

Great album, difficult choice to pick a fave, went with I Believe in You in the end although I'd be ok with any one of half a dozen as a favourite. The sound quality of this album is very good and the musicianship exceptional, it all comes together on this one for me. Great stuff.

    Well, today it's 'Precious Angel'

Might be tomorrow as well but ... could easily be 'I Believe In You'

And in a couple of days 'When He Returns'

Astounding tracks from a strong album.

    Best Wishes,
    David

Strong album. Great sound. Consistent songwriting, nice arrangements, and even some good singing. Also the guitars sound terrific. Fave track "Precious Angel".

I Believe In You, but I'm not a fan of this album. I'm surprised to see Gotta Serve Somebody leading the poll. I think it's horrible!

To my surprise I could not choose one track. I went with Slow Train, but it was quite arbitrary. To me it sounds like a very consistent album. I love it.

The song that doesn't have any explicit mention of faith is coincidentally my favourite. Man gave names..... Alright, it's actually no coincidence. No-one else seems to have noticed that Judee Sill should have had a co-writing credit on When he returns, but she was a year away from eternal heroin oblivion and didn't give a ****!

Agree with every word of this.
It’s my least favourite track, too: seems less interesting musically and lyrically.
