So at $20 record with $80 worth of photos and a box? Bite me. This is pathetic. There is no justification for this price. I wouldn't buy this even if the inside of the box was lined with fabric from Bowie's speedo.

A lot of these copyright-preservation releases (Dylan, the Beatles, the Stones) are very hurdle-y. They're forced to "put it out", but they might not really want it being front and center of the catalog, representing the brand; or cannibalizing their own market.

So you have vinyl, short-window streams, iTunes for a month, $100 albums like this, etc.

Of course it's possible not to gouge, but what the copyright holders hear: "leaving money on the table".

(But indeed, hats off to the Beach Boys for doing it right.)

    What in the F????

The estate is doing a phenomenal job sabotaging the fan base as every release is rolled out...

Yeah, I'm easily letting "Space Oddity" pass me by, dying with its secrets, but I might feel differently when those titles appear.

They would have sold a helluva more units (and made MUCH more $$) making these three separate releases a 3LP set for $50.

Which something tells me one year from now, that release will actually happen.

I dunno. A giant 3LP dump of folky-demo Bowie is only for the hardiest of souls.

    Always leave them wanting more.

Plus if simply copyright preservation, they probably don’t care if people don’t want to pay for it! No one else should be able to make money from it...

Exactly. It's a legal exercise, and while it would be nice to cover expenses, I'm sure that for some of these releases, the owners would be just as happy to sell 25 copies and toss the unsold physical product on the bonfire.

The "the ongoing celebrations" bit just made me laugh out loud. Where exactly are these "going on"? In the wallet of the dedicated "fan"? As part of my private celebrations I will pull out my US original of "Man Of Words" (free) and spend the rest on a decent bottle of red!

The era of "issue archival album for the standard list price of an album" is long gone. They know that the only audience for these things is collectors and fanatics, and they are pricing accordingly.

    It's sad...

Now those delicious stereo, professionally recorded non-brickwalled WG RCA cd's don't sound quite that expensive, do they ?

So true. It's blatantly taking advantage of the disposable income of the boomers and (some of) their children, who are the last generation(s) of physical music buyers. From a business perspective I understand it, but it leaves me cold.

Wouldn't something like this work better as a RSD exclusive, like BOWPROMO was a few years ago. Of course, the fact that I have seen copies of BOWPROMO being slashed $20 below what it originally cost might say otherwise. I remember one store here had it for list price when it came out, then was sitting on so many of it that they dropped it to $35

People complain about expensive 7” boxes so they put out a 12” at double the price  Gotta love it.

I’m pretty sure I have a bootleg of this so no way I’m paying that much

I think I'm going to skip and I feel bad since I try to support every new release possible. $70 on Amazon.

Are they making these in extreme limited quantities (given they're basically copyright fillers) in the guise that these are going to rocket in value in the future?

Disgusting price. This is 'a more money than sense' purchase.

We should all chose the same day to preorder on Amazon and give them an influx of orders
    .
    .
    .
And then all cancel 24 hours later with reason
    “Price too high”.

    That’ll flag something somewhere.
