One of the few that for me its's impossible Watch That Man Sweet Thing/Candidate, and Diamond Dogs Most of "Low" my favourite Bowie album Heroes of course etc.
I find it dark and somewhat difficult in places-which isn't to say it's no good, it's genius, and what a way to go out.
Impossible for me to pick a single favourite, but up there are The Sweet Thing "suite" Teenage Wildlife Aladdin Sane Lady Stardust Side 1 of Low African Night Flight Scream Like A Baby Move On Look Back In Anger Letter To Hermione Memory Of A Free Festival Blackout Actually, most of his 70's output, and the last two albums.
WRT Girl Loves Me's F-Bombs, I've always taken the line "Where the **** did Monday go?" as being more about Bowie's awareness of his encroaching mortality than any attempt to "sound alternative and controversial". I somehow doubt that Bowie would have felt any need to be "alternative and controversial" at that point in his life. He'd done all that about 45 years previously. But the only person who could explain the intent of that lyric is no longer with us, sadly.
It sounds like what Bowie was best at, combining darkness with difficulty and many times producing genius.
All the more reason to admit them. It's become my favorite of his albums in recent years (displacing 'Heroes') but I doubt any of my top 10 Bowie songs would come from it. Which is sort of weird. I wish this thread had included a poll. I'm glad to see "Win" getting mention. Mesmerizing song. And "Stay" surprised me. Always liked it. Dark horse here: "Criminal World" --though he didn't write it, he does a knockout job with it.
Know what you mean. "Low" is a true "album experience. Great tracks of course, but no favourite Bowie song, as I understood thread title. But as a whole, wonderful. As is Diamond Dogs.
Yeah Diamond Dogs is one of my very favorite albums, and even with "Sweet Thing" I'm not sure it lands any tracks in my top ten. Then again I'm not sure what my top ten are. "Diamond Dogs" – 5:56 "Sweet Thing" – 3:37 "Candidate" – 2:39 "Sweet Thing (Reprise)" – 2:31 "Rebel Rebel" – 4:30 "We Are the Dead" – 4:58 "1984" – 3:27 "Big Brother" – 3:21 Wow, seven or eight knockout tracks off this one album. DD was my gateway drug when I was a kid. Aside from Space Oddity I suppose. Then I discovered Aladdin Sane.
Maybe so, but I still hate it. The worst song on an otherwise good album. It's all opinions and tastes isn't it?
Not best, but favorites of mine: Life On Mars Changes Aladdin Sane Rebel Rebel Young Americans Modern Love This Is Not America
I vote for all of the above. But.... Life on Mars Changes Aladdin Sane Ashes to Ashes Fashion Space Oddity Heroes The Man Who Sold the World Suffragette City Five Years This is Not America (nod to Pat Metheny) Under Pressure (nod to Queen) Sound and Vision Breaking Glass Let's Dance China Girl Young Americans Jean Genie John I'm Only Dancing TVC 15
I wouldn't be able to narrow it down to his 100 best songs, let alone just one. But let me mention "Absolute Beginners" as one of the front-runners - not many people think of this 1986 release, but it's epic music.
