YES! I love it so much more than The River. I also very much enjoyed the full CD of outtakes from The River box set.
Great! It's shocking to think about that he had such a record ready to go and just redid it. I like the album as he putcit out in 1980, but the single album version is a desert island disc for me.
Happy 40th anniversary to my favorite Springsteen album! Released 10/17/1980. I have the original vinyl and the Tie That Bind box set.
first, i am a big springsteen fan, so no malice intended in this post. so please be nice. second, i think 'the river' is springsteen's 'exile on main street'.....extremely over-rated, way above and beyond what it really is. just like exile. it is a double album and we are SUPPOSED to think its great, so we do. third - if you eliminate a bout half the songs it might make for a decent single album.
Two Hearts Hungry Heart Out in the Street Cadillac Ranch * I’d add “Meet Me in the City” if it were an option
The Ties That Bind Sherry Darling The River Fade Away Point Blank I love this album. It was hard to stop at five songs. An earlier poster described it as a jumbled mess, but to me that's a big part of it's charm.
Ties Hearts River Price Be True Very tough. "The River" is a great album but not one that's "top heavy". It's very consistent so it's more difficult to pick 5 songs clearly above the rest!
Very easy: there's exactly 5 tracks that I like above everything else on the album Hungry Heart The River Point Blank Stolen Car Wreck On The Highway I have various issues with nearly ever other track (better arrangement, better mix, better similar song from the sessions etc...). the 5 listed above are perfect or near perfect (#6 would be Out In The Street)
Out in the streets Hungry heart Drive all night the River I wanna marry you LOVE this album , probably my favorite of all his albums
A reasonably priced 2-CD set of THE RIVER, and BORN TO RUN too, are available for sale here https://forums.stevehoffman.tv/thre...3-the-river-2-cd-set-near-mint-discs.1034387/
1. Ties That Bind - (Ties That Bind Version) 2. Loose Ends - (Ties That Bind Version) 3. Stolen Car - (Ties That Bind Version) 4. Point Blank 5. The River (Ties that bind version)
My top 5- the vote getters... then add in the Most Honorable Mentions and the Honorable Mentions & Voila! The perfect 14 track, single CD distillation of "The River"!! ~"The Ties That Bind" ~"Independence Day" ~"Hungry Heart" ~"Out In The Street" ~"The River" Most Honorable Mention: "Sherry Darling" "Two Hearts" "Cadillac Ranch" "I'm A Rocker" "Fade Away" Honorable Mention: "You Can Look (But You Better Not Touch)" "Point Blank" "Stolen Car" "The Price You Pay"
Going with the original album: 1)ties (my favorite boss song of all time) 2)two hearts 3)sherry 4)price you pay 5)drive all night (stunning)
'the river' far and away springsteen's most over-rated album, pared down to a single album would have made it much much better.
The Ties That Bind I Wanna Marry You - I note a few others have voted for it, but I'm the first to own up Drive All Night Wreck On The Highway Be True Also if it included the Ties That Bind original album in the list I would have Loose Ends in, and would think very hard about Stolen Car
The split between heartrending sorrow/regret and fun pop exuberance is the glory of this album. The lightweight hot-rod throwaways people sneer at are among my strongest faves. Sherry Darling Independence Day Hungry Heart The River I’m a Rocker
As a Jersey boy in 1980 when the album came out I always thought it was a reference to Jackson, NJ another central Jersey town west of the shore (Like Freehold) that wasn't much of anything until 6 Flags/Great Adventure opened there in the mid-70's
