i know it is a solo effort, but 'carefree country day' is one of jimmy messina's best tunes. fits nicely on this album too.

i also like 'last time around" much more than s/t.

i know i am in the minority, but i consider jim messina to be a member of the springfield, always did.

'again' is surely the pinnacle, a total group effort, and it shows just how brilliant this could have been.

Not familiar with the set. Could be, I'll look into that. Anyhow it is a good take.

When I saw Messina recently, he played "Kind Woman", and related how he also played guitar on that recorded track but didn't take credit so as not to upset Stills or Ritchie. Without Messina we would likely would not have Last Time Around---at least not as it is. His participation in the music and his production & engineering skills made for a great album....IMHO.Love "Carefree Country Way" also....perfect Messina tune. Messina's skills on lead guitar are pretty amazing even today. Nice bass lines on Last Time Around.

I can easily forget about the circumstances of its creation and say it's every bit as good as BSA. And, unlike BSA, it isn't saddled with a disposable track like "Good Time Boy.'

More Jim Messina vocals, too: definitely a good thing.

young was adamant about not including messina in the truncated springfield reunion a few years back, from what i read both stills and furay wanted him included.

that whole mess really was all on neil young.......and the big loser in it was furay, who might have made quite a bit of money doing a tour.

Messina is on the cover so yeah...considered a real member, unlike the many other bassists that were brought in as Palmer was in, and out, and gone. He always includes Buffalo Springfield tunes in his live sets. He is a strong part of their history...on one of their three albums.

This used to get slated a lot in the past.

The smaller, slip-cased version is the one I have. Picked it up when it was reiussed a few years ago for less than a tenner.

Last Time Around is no more stylistically disparate than the Again album. They were too individual as songwriters/arrangers to really put together a smoothly integrated album. If people find it uneven I recommend getting the Retrospective LP compilation put out by Atlantic not long after. A wonderful group but impossible to keep together.

Good if you just want the music.

I was a Buffalo Springfield fan from day one, but it took me a while to get into Last Time Around. I originally had this record on 4 track cartridge tape for my car. I remember it sounded really good for a cartridge tape, but it is now one of my favorites. It kind of showcased where the musicians would eventually move on to.

My dominant impression of this album is that Stills is really coming into his own as an arranger and multi-instrumentalist. It feels like a direct lead in to his remarkable work on the first CSN album.

BF : Stills best work( most consistent).
Did he wrote any songs that were intended for the MoNkeeS?

I'm trying to understand. Slated a lot in the past? You mean slagged?

I really rate it. You mean you really hate it or you like it as in "rate it highly"?

    Slagged then.
