A official visual retrospective needs to be released, complete with a deep dive into the CBC archives...
I listened to a long interview with her last night on CBC. She has such energy! Buffy seems to be a wonderful human being who has worked tirelessly for good. And dang, what a vibrato. Her psychedelic album, Illuminations is one of my favorites. Her song Starwalker from 1992 is one of the most intense (and musically successful) songs in the early 90's by a 60's artists. Rock on, Buffy.
Agreed — I love these albums and unfortunately MCA was terrible at promoting them... Also not to be missed is the 1992 “comeback” album “Coincidence And Likely Stories”! Happy 80th Buffy and thanks for all the incredible music and activism!
Agreed, as well. Amazingly I have a Swedish pressing of Sweet America not on MCA but on the Abba label, Polar!
I have this compilation in my collection. It contains three of her '70s albums: Buffy (1974), Changing Woman (1975), and Sweet America (1976). Recommended!
I don't recall ever hearing a whole lot of her material, with the exception of this sprightly little track that seemed to get a lot of airplay whenever I listened to the radio in the '70s when it was current, but I don't believe it was even a particularly big hit - Buffy Sainte-Marie, Indian Cowboy in the Rodeo:
A personal favourite cover version that I unfortunately discovered a decade or so after the '60s was this effort which is practically the dictionary definition of "jangly" - Glen Campbell, Universal Soldier:
Happy 80th Buffy! She was the first Artist ever saw ¨In Concert¨ (w/ Papa John Creach), at age 14, at a very obscure, local, small, late-70s hippie ¨Free Festival¨. (The venue was a pasture below some sacred Indian Cliff in the West Hills of the Edna Valley, Central California, during the school year in 1979, IIRC. It was a very ramshackle affair; one tee~pee caught on fire killing one of the 400-700? folks camped out there. It was called: The Festival of The Sun! Happy she is still alive and still singing and protesting!
On the news front Canada Post will be issuing a Buffy Sainte-Marie stamp in the near future. Canada Post to recognize Buffy Sainte-Marie with commemorative stamp
Heard Buffy's cover of Joni's "Circle Game" for the first time in decades the other day. Saskatchewan has certainly produced more than it's fair share of talent, and the most NHL players per capita of anywhere. What does that have to do with anything? All part of the wondrous heart of the prairies. Happy birthday to Buffy and about time they put her on a stamp.
Her music was very influential to the Alcatraz Occupation, which did wonders to galvanize attention to the plight of affairs of Native Americans. I like her song where she plays the Jew's Harp and sings about going down to see "my gal". I can't remember the name of it but it's a good tune.
Happy Birthday Buffy ! Hope you had a great day ! Joy and good health and all good wishes to you. A great singer songwriter and a fine performer whose music has stayed vibrant throughout the years . I've seen her in concert several times and had a brief chat with her at one of her concerts - she struck me as a warm , unaffected and kind natured lady. If you'd like to know more about Buffy 's fascinating life's journey, I suggest you read the authorized biography Buffy by Andrea Warner .
Growing up in SK, I've always been vaguely aware and liked what little ive heard - so what would you suggest as an intro?
My favorite album of hers is Little Wheel Spin and Spin (1966). It contains what is probably her most well known song “My Country 'Tis of Thy People You're Dying.”
Instead of albums I am just going to suggest some songs that I have loved for years - most of which I still sing and play: Universal Soldier Now That The Buffalo is Gone Piney Wood Hills Until It's Time for you to Go Starwalker Up Where We Belong god is alive magic is afoot ( not hers but a stunning performance) The Dream Tree - a personal favorite of mine , not as well known as her others, but goes straight to the ( my) heart Enjoy!
